The Hollywood actress, however, counts the Russian deputy foreign minister Yuri Fedotov among her acquaintances - and thus it would appear that red tape was quietly brushed aside as officials prostrated themselves to attend to her every need. The result? Jolie was reported to have recently left Russia having 'acquired' a child, not from an orphanage, but from an impoverished Russian woman. Precise details are scarce. Jolie's management refuses to confirm or deny if she had adopted a Russian child on her visit there.

But if the story is indeed true, then perhaps we should not be surprised. The 29-year-old Lara Croft star, who receives £6 million per film, is used to getting what she wants, when she wants it. "I want to create a rainbow family," she has said. "That's children of different religions and cultures, from different countries. Actually, I'd love to have seven, a small football team.
"I'm drawn to kids that are already born. I believe I'm meant to find my children in the world somewhere and not necessarily have them genetically. I like to think with every adoption I'm saving another child from an orphanage."
