I do like the goatee but earring has to go. And while I agree with his remarks to some degree, I don't have a problem with actors who embrace social activism. We need all the help we can get.
Really?? From actors? Their reality is so skewed from the norm; most are extremely uneducated; and they focus on instantaneous results rather than long-term strategies, primarily results dealing with self-gratification and PR.
Well said Anon Feb 13, 10:00Am Most celebs know that talking about the three taboos(drugs politics and religion) are out of bounds. You want to teach me about studios, lighting or how to take a fall and i will listen but dont tell me what to think about my country.. asshats
For all of you who felt the need to skew me for my remarks about social activism and needing help....do any of you work in non-profit, trying to make the world a better place? If you did, you might understand my point of view.
You people are amazingly nasty when you disagree with someone. This sight is supposed to be fun. Try to remember that.
I don't have a problem with actors embracing social activism, hey if they do and are willing to walk the walk, then good for them. I do however have a problem with actors embracing political activism and shooting off their political ideas to the public.
The only people who REALLY have a problem with celebs speaking out are Republicans. Although, they seem to have no problem if the celeb is pro-Conservative, like Charlton Heston or Partricia Heaton.
I'm a conservative Republican, and I think Charlton Heston is a retard. I don't even know who Partricia Heaton is. Sorry to burst your bubble there anonymous liberal.
@ 1:29 - After the last election, members of the DNC noted that they believed people Michael Moore and Barbra Streisand hurt their campaign. Even Democrats want Hollywood to shut up.
Harrison Ford has just earned my respect and adoration for his views on celebrity political pundits. It is tremendously refreshing to hear him come forward and simply state the obvious - - We don't want to hear another damn celebrity opinion on our nations politics. It is something to keep to themselves! So the rest of Hollyweird please take note and SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY! Whew........thanks for letting me vent and Have a Great Day! :)
harrison's right, these celebs think their political views are more important than ours just becuase they're famous. even if i agree with them, it's dumb. much love to harrison and calista.
Anon 12:49.. I agree with you partially. However as one of the soldiers in the trenches, so to speak, I do know that we are not defined by what we say but by what we do. The problem is that so many of these Hollywood social activist/actors are clueless as to the reality of what life is for the hoi polloi in suburbia America. Hollywood's value system is definitely much different from those of my friends and family here in the Mid-West....For many social activism is simply another opportunity for publicity and networking.
so true.. so so true.. it's easy to go volunteer and look like a saint when you're rich and don't have a job!
still, i do like it when celebs volunteer, like what angelina jolie does. there's really nothing bad you can say about helping starving people. or what sean penn did saving people's lives in new orleans.
lol! sean penn went there wearing a bullet proof vest and toting a personal photographer to chronicle his "bravery". he didn't save anything, but he did preserve his ego. fuck sean penn. i miss jeff spicoli.
anon @ 2:49.. I couldn't agree more. Sean Penn takes himself WAY too seriously. What the hell does he know, anyway? He's a great actor, he needs to stick to that.
And I miss Jeff Spicoli, too. I can just imagine what he'd say to George Bush.. "You DICK!" and about the Republicans, in general.. "Those guys are fags!" Yep, I think I could respect that. Sean Penn.. not so much.
He had me till..."There are things that I think are happening in the world that are egregious mistakes but I'm only operating out of my own box."
Uh, he just completely talked out of both sides of his ass when he said that after his first comments. I read that statement and know EXACTLY where he stands. He's just like all the other idiot actors.
And yes, I work for a non-profit. And no, I don't get your point. They all need to shut their traps and talk about what they know -- making millions and looking pretty. (Well, most of them.)
"lol! sean penn went there wearing a bullet proof vest and toting a personal photographer to chronicle his "bravery" "
so what if he wore a bulletproof vest? and he could have brought the photographer to show other people what's going on in new orleans. and he did save people's lives.
"he could have brought the photographer to show other people what's going on in new orleans."
Bahaha!!! Considering that the only photos that he released to be widely shown, were the ones of HIM in various, fake rescue POSES.
Uh, did he NOT check the MEDIA before he went to NOLA? Did he go temporarily blind, when all the photos of what was going on in NOLA were flashed all over the screen, many a website and newspaper?
Horrific shots were everywhere, the very first day, without thanks to Sean Penn the moron.
"he did save people's lives."
Maybe he did. Or maybe, we all just remember when his freaking rowboat sunk, and he was busy making freak out poses in 3-feet of shallow water.
What did he do, post all his photos of OTHER people in his wee lil', personal scrapbook?
Nice try. You fell for the loser's shenanigans. I have much more respect for the actors and actresses who went there without their own personal photog, didn't take the time to worry about the world knowing they were there. Focusing on rescue and forgetting about themselves.
When the war machine cranks up, the media becomes part of the machinery. I don' see why he should not speak up more about politics since they are intertwined for a long period now.
Are you kidding, which hurricane were you watching? Harry Connick, Jr. was one of the first to send images of the devastation in NOLA. If not for him and the other celebrities ddrawing attention to what was going on at the convention center etc, Bush and his gang could have gone forever denying that there was a problem down there. Sean Penn was there before any government rescue groups. How could that happen? Thank God for people that can draw attention to some of these issues.
I really don't think anyone can assume what his viewpoint is on just one sentence i.e."...things in the world are egregious mistakes" Sometime if you look hard enough you will come up with the wrong assumption.I think his comment was very pc.
I wouldn't ask President Bush or Senator Kennedy about what rock or hip-hop album to buy or what movie I should see. Then why would I ask actors or Hollywood celebrities about what politics are correct or what foreign policy to endorse? Most actors just jump on the bandwagon of causes of the month. They follow their fellow actors like drones. If they want to give advice, give it about something for which they have some expertise. Like acting or the arts.
I am pleased to see that someone in film, an actor, knows that just because he plays a part doesn't mean he knows everything. Harrison may have played a president but he doesn't think he has to tell the president what to do, or us how the pres is doing. I appreciate that and shall continue to watch his movies. In fact, even though I wasn't going to see this film, I think I will now.
only people in nyc and la believe in red state/blue state. the rest of us live in a world where there's much more diversity and respect for that diversity. congrats to harrison ford for showing the kind of respect for democracy, dignity and intelligence so many other hollywood elitists promote. it's these values i wish were pervasive, but sadly it's those who are disrespectful that will impose their belief systems and attempts at conversion on us.
only people in nyc and la believe in red state/blue state. the rest of us in america live in a diverse world with diverse opinions and respect for that diversity.
i don't mind someone being a celebrity and voicing their opinion, it's the radicals on the right and left who believe everyone who disagrees with them is wrong and must be converted.
that kind of fundamentalism from liberals and hard right conservatives turns me off and it's not a terribly intellecutal approach.
i prefer the quiet dignity of harrison ford. makes me want to know what his politics are and makes me believe that there is at least a bit of forethought and consideration put into those values.
Harrison is lying. Here are some political statements he has made:
"I'm very troubled by the proliferation of arms, at the fact so many people in the United States carry guns. It obviously contributes greatly to the crime problems we have. I'm sure gun laws should be strengthened in the United States. I just don't know the correct mechanism."
"I'm very disturbed about the direction American foreign policy is going. I think something needs to be done to help alleviate the conditions which have created a disenfranchised and angry faction in the Middle East. I don't think military intervention is the correct solution. I regret what we as a country have done so far."
So he's too political....too unpolitical....geez, will anybody ever be happy?! I think what he says is fine, but I don't think there's anything wrong with a celebrity endorsing a political candidate, for example. Look at the attention Angelina has brought to Darfur and Pakistan, because she's a celebrity (and one of the most talked-about). Bringing attention to a cause is something celebrities can do.
Harrison should dump "Styx" Choke-lista Fookheart for a woman with "meat on her bones" like Rachael Ray. Right now she's married to Pete Rose Jr. a Pete look-a-like WHO GETS paid to sign Pete Rose Jr. to baseball cards with Pete Rose on them. Harrison is smarter them Mel-E-mel Gibson. He doesn't get drunk and hit on Cher.... Why can't Mr. Ford nail one of those "HOT" weather babes on the Weather Channel? He was Texas Jones of the force... power team! Everyone knows who he is, even Mel-e-mel Gibson! Ditty can always date Jennifer Lopez, she works at the weather channel. Marc-A-honlenoy is married to another J. Ho
