I think, perhaps, Mr. McKellen isn't looking at things from Jake's perspective.

Questions of whether Jake is secretly gay aside, isn't it reasonable that he would be afraid or apprehensive (perhaps terrifying is a bit strong) at the prospect of kissing another man? Is it unreasonable to be afraid of doing things, sexually at least, that are outside of what you enjoy or consider "normal"?

I'm not saying that men kissing each other is wrong, any more than men kissing women or women kissing women (well, OK, women kissing each other can be kinda hot, but that's another issue). For Jake, evidently, kissing men is not (or was not) something he's used to doing and it made him uncomfortable. I really don't think he was trying to say that it was wrong or terrifying inherently (at least it didn't sound like that).

What was wrong was for him to take the part in the first place if kissing men bothered him that much. Similarly, if Ian found the thought of kissing Helen Mirren terrifying, he should have opted out.

I think people are just a little bit uptight about all of this. There's too little love in the world for people to be so upset about kissing, for crying out loud. Beats the heck out of shooting or bombs, doesn't it?

Ian is being needlessly over-sensitive about this.

If an actor has never sky-dived before and has to do it for a movie, they might say that sky-diving was a terrifying experience. Similarly, Jake has never kissed a guy before and having to do so put him out of his comfort zone so of course he would also term the experience as "terrifying." What is wrong with that?

Ian needs to lighten up and stop acting as though something is stuck up his ass. No pun intended.

Jake made that comment before the release of the movie.He wasn't sure if his character in BBM could ruin his career. I agreed with Mc Kellen. I saw Heath's facial expression in Opra show when Jake said that Jake and Ann (topless)in the car was his favorite scene. It brought some refreshment to the making of the movie. He is still very young, unthinking. Jake is my favorite movie star now after I've seen BBM.

I doubt whether anyone really cares all that much if jg takes it up the ass, its his own business, but for mr. mk to put up a defensive because jake said that kissing a man was terrifying is just plain stupid. Here's the thing..he wasnt saying that homosexuality was terrifying, he was saying that the role was terrifyingly challenging for him because it was so much out of his comfort zone. That's all. There's not really that much to digress.
Oh, and another thing..the 'same sex preference' society at my university rallies every three months to lobby equal rights for all students..so far, absolutely no problem with that. But then they call themselves the "queer" department and..wait for it..get offended when they're referred to as queer.

i mean was he talking about the actual kiss? or the possibility of his career tanking because of it? I mean, I know that alittle before and after BBM there seems to be a wide acceptance of queen-for-the-screen actors and whatnot, but that is a VERY RECENT thing, still. BBM could have tanked Jake's career, which was, until then, teetering on the edge of mega-success. It could have gone either way. I never read Jake's interview, but I did read the semi-offensive one where he's like "oh, yeah, me and heath were like 'let's get this love scenes over and done with and get down to the important stuff'..." fuck off, twat. i got REALLY tired REALLY quick of Ang LEe, Jake, and Heath downplaying the fact that is was a gay romance. Sorry, boys, but it is a GAY ROMANCE. the DYNAMIC of the GAY in that part IS important. Because Heath's character wouldn't be freaking out if the object of his desire was a female and it was just about a male-female relationship. This is part-and-parcel of why I hate BBM, because of the smell of desperation the actors and director stunk the movie promotions with in an effort to appease the kinda-sorta-homophobes. Fuck BBM.
