I would never belittle an American homeless or disadvantaged child's suffering, but let's just think critically here:
In the States, we have systems available to help poor kids. They are flawed, poorly funded, and don't reach every kid who needs them. I know. However, giving time, money, or both to these organizations will save at least one (and, with the kind of cash celebrities have to throw around, a lot of them) child from dying of hunger or illness or exposure. I don't claim to know whether or not Brangelina has given anything to these groups; I am just pointing out that help--tremendous help, potentially--CAN be provided to American children within its own system.
Developing countries don't have that option. There are no social services (and if there are, they're even worse off than our system, guaranteed), no soup kitchens, no shelters, and no Medicare. There might not even be a doctor who believes in medicine over gingerroot poultice, let alone a hospital to go to. Mere survival is a lot harder for an orphan in a developing country than for one in the US.
My heart goes out to ALL orphans and disadvantaged children. But my mind understands why a person (celebrity or otherwise) might choose to adopt a foreign child over an American one.
And before you waste the energy typing, I already know plenty of you disagree with me for patriotic/nationalistic reasons, for the (probable) hypocrisy of Angelina and Brad (whose contributions to American organizations for kids probably don't compensate for their work abroad), or for a philosophy of help-at-home-first. I get it. I'm just trying to work out logical reasons why a person might think foreign adoption would make a bigger difference (since it's obviously futile and disrespectful to discuss which children are "deserving" enough to be adopted).
I agree that every child deserves to be taken care of, but I hate watching the money that COULD be helping America go to other countries that won't/can't help their own people. I'm not heartless, I get teary eyed when I see the Christian Children's Fund commercials, but we don't help our own first. To me, that's a problem. America should help America first, then move on to others.

If a kid is a kid... then why don't they just adopt a black kid from an agency here? The argument goes both ways. They've done their humanitarian good deeds in other countries, now i think it's time for them to adopt from the U.S., are the kids not poor or needy enough for them?
