I'd just like to point out that schizophrenia can only occur if you have a genetic predisposition for it. Not that I know if BS does or not. Also, I've never heard of drugs causing schizophrenia (maybe schizoid episodes, but I don't know). I HAVE heard of schizophrenics using drugs to self-medicate.
That being said...I (and probably no one else) have any qualifications beyond Abnormal Psych 509, and certainly can't "diagnose" someone even if I had reliable information on their condition. Sketchy leaks from a rehab center and Brit's so-called "friends" make it even more futile.

all but the death list sounds pretty normal for a person who is going through detox. Even if she did make a death list, that is also not out of the norm for a person who is hitting rock bottom due to alcohol, drugs, depression. Pretty much what is expected, blaming others for ones problems when one is a drug addict. She is getting the help she needs, and although I am not paticularly fond of her music or choices she has made, she should be left alone during her treatment.

I'm guessing she had garden-variety depression (not post-partum) for much of the past few years. She turned to drugs because they made her feel better at first, then she abused them and degenerated into a psychotic state either while doing the drugs (esp. cocaine) or while withdrawing from them. It's common in that state to experience hallucinations, paranoid delusions, and panic attacks. And it doesn't do any good for medical staff to blab about what's going on with her, since all drug-and-psychiatric treatment requires privacy and confidentiality, it just doesn't work otherwise. If these leaks are real, somebody is going to be fired, and if Britney bolts from the facility her lawyers could cover her tracks by suing for malpractice (they'd probably win a hefty settlement, quickly).

*IF* she has schizophrenia, or another legitimate mental illness, she has my sincere sympathy. There's an undeserved stigma attached to mental illness. The overwhelming majority of people with mental illness have a genetic pre-disposition to it, and would much rather be mentally healthy.
I have a good friend who was diagnosed with schizophrenia a few years back. I say good friend, because he still is a friend, regardless of his illness. He is a warm-hearted person who has never done a drug in his life, and in no way brought the illness upon himself.
(I've done alot of reading on schizophrenia over the last few years, and there is alot of conflicting opinions/research as to whether or not drugs can cause it or increase ones chances of developing it. Accepted though is that drugs DO increase the degree of symptoms, as well as the progression of the disease. YES, alot of schizophrenics self-medicate with alcohol or drugs. )
She could also be bi-polar. Schizophrenia and bi-polar symptoms often mirror one another so closely that the two disease are often mis-diagnosed for one another.
Hard drug use DOES cause schizophrenia-like symptoms over the long term.

My friend got hooked on Xanax, and ended up in a rehab for 18 months (3 times released, but fell back into it). It makes you feel good - but it's VERY addictive, and has bad effects longterm. I'd stay away from it.

Also, I've never heard of drugs causing schizophrenia (maybe schizoid episodes, but I don't know). I HAVE heard of schizophrenics using drugs to self-medicate.

I'm guessing she had garden-variety depression (not post-partum) for much of the past few years. She turned to drugs because they made her feel better at first, then she abused them and degenerated into a psychotic state either while doing the drugs (esp. cocaine) or while withdrawing from them. It's common in that state to experience hallucinations, paranoid delusions, and panic attacks. And it doesn't do any good for medical staff to blab about what's going on with her, since all drug-and-psychiatric treatment requires privacy and confidentiality, it just doesn't work otherwise. If these leaks are real, somebody is going to be fired, and if Britney bolts from the facility her lawyers could cover her tracks by suing for malpractice (they'd probably win a hefty settlement, quickly).

*IF* she has schizophrenia, or another legitimate mental illness, she has my sincere sympathy. There's an undeserved stigma attached to mental illness. The overwhelming majority of people with mental illness have a genetic pre-disposition to it, and would much rather be mentally healthy.
I have a good friend who was diagnosed with schizophrenia a few years back. I say good friend, because he still is a friend, regardless of his illness. He is a warm-hearted person who has never done a drug in his life, and in no way brought the illness upon himself.
(I've done alot of reading on schizophrenia over the last few years, and there is alot of conflicting opinions/research as to whether or not drugs can cause it or increase ones chances of developing it. Accepted though is that drugs DO increase the degree of symptoms, as well as the progression of the disease. YES, alot of schizophrenics self-medicate with alcohol or drugs. )
She could also be bi-polar. Schizophrenia and bi-polar symptoms often mirror one another so closely that the two disease are often mis-diagnosed for one another.
Hard drug use DOES cause schizophrenia-like symptoms over the long term.
Just some thoughts.....I'll reserve any snide comments at her expense simply because she *may* be mentally ill. The mentally ill deserve sympathy, NOT ridicule.

First of all, there is no such thing as bad publicity. Second of all, America loves a great comeback story. If Britney gets totally sober, and really GETS what sobriety is all about, she could come back and be a force to be reckoned with. I think this is a good thing. How else was she to shake off the teen years. This will be the line of demarcation from manufactured Britney to adult been-around-the-block Britney. Anything is possible.

Ok, bottom line is, kids, she seriously is having some sort of psychotic episode. It could be, as speculated above:
(1) post-partum (or, as one person said, pardum? lol) psychosis, (2) methamphetamine or other drug-induced psychosis, or (3) if you want get real fancy, psychotic disorder not otherwise specified (yes, that is an official diagnosis, meaning, in a nutshell, psychotic in a schizophrenic or other mental illness way, but not having enough of the criteria for any one specific illness). Read your DSM, kids!
Why she isn't already in a mental hospital is beyond me. I mean, shaving your head is something people do sometimes when they are having an episode (want to rid themselves of body hair) or that drug users do when they are having drug-induced psychosis - thinking bugs are crawling all over their body. Or, god forbid, she could have lice, probably from going down on paris hilton, and she needed that shit shaved off. Probably need to do a little bleaching and bug-removal at promises rehab now too. Yick!

PPD is a b!tch man. I developed Panic/Anxiety Disorder because of post partum depresson. NOT fun. I feel bad for her. Hope they can help her through it all. I still say Britney was losing it well BEFORE Kevin, babies or the heavy drugs came along. I don't feel sorry for her - esp since she treated her baby like a dog (letting him get severe sunburns, the lapdog incident, etc.).
PPD will be what her PR people use as an excuse, but it goes well beyond that. Her family and management left her untreated when the signs of instability were already there in the latter part of 2002. How do you let THAT many years go by without helping someone?
This is ANS all over again. Keep in mind that ANS was doing drugs and acting psycho well BEFORE her baby came along too.

My friend got hooked on Xanax, and ended up in a rehab for 18 months (3 times released, but fell back into it). It makes you feel good - but it's VERY addictive, and has bad effects longterm. I'd stay away from it.

truth 2:46. i was just watching a video taken by k-fed--a year back? two? where brit is acting eerily out of it, talking about time travel, just spacing big time. i think she's either finally developed full-blow schizophrenia or has a very severe case of bipolar--which can also cause some of the types of symptoms we're hearing about.

Man over the past few weeks she has not just fallen apart but she's written her own "kids, don't turn out this way" kind of career implosion. I have been away from celebrity news for a little while because everything was Anna Nicole, but now I see that this girl has taken a turn for the worse.
Why hasn't her family taken her out of LA? Don't they know that whole environment is a fishtank full of sharks? It is not possible to live a normal life there and she needs to be someplace quiet and secluded if she is talking as crazy as they say she is. That MDMA can and will fry your brain and rewire your circuits, people...and she was taking that and tweaking...THEN had hormonal changes from 2 babies under 2 years...I bet her brain is melted goo stuck to her spinal cord now. If she allows herself to live past 30 it's going to be interesting to see how all those drugs and pills affect her memory and thinking as she starts aging.

i'm not talking out my ass either. i worked for a mental health advocacy in NYC and my mother-in-law was head nurse at the adolescent psych unit in bellevue for a very very long time.
yes, she has done tons of drugs. this may mean that she has now stirred up enough shit chemistry-wise in her brain to actually be one or the other. self-medicating and mental illness often go hand in hand.

Actually, Paris Hilton WANTS to have children - that's scary. I have felt a great deal of disapprovel of Britney because of the way she treats her children - when she sees them. But now I realize that she does have a very serious problem. I hope she gets better, and that she realizes her own pathology, because if she got better she could be a very good celebrity spokesperson for the mentally ill. I don't think this is just post-partum, or just drugs, it is much more complicated than that. And I agree with the people who said her family used her for a meal ticket. And they will again, if she doesn't realize what's going on and start taking control of herself.
