Remember "nobody connected the dots"? It was said all the time about 9/11, because there was more than enough data available to have foreseen and prevented the attack. The problem was that the government agencies didn't work together, and individually they weren't competent enough at analysis to figure things out in time to develop a plan of action. So what's been the solution? Make it easier to obtain more information (by invading privacy), but don't do anything to make it easier to "connect the dots" (none of the agencies are working together any better than before, in fact everything is bigger and more disorganized than ever). It'll keep going this way because of the tremendous success in drumming up mindless popular support for these measures (read the comments above).

the argument is not doing something vs doing nothing. it's whether or not we're doing something that makes sense. wiretapping laws used to be very soft and permitted extensive wiretapping. the result? false prosecutions, blackmailing, and other abuses of power by the fbi. so yeah, you can be innocent of a crime and suffer huge negative consequences. that's why the laws were tightened up - a judge had to ok every wiretap, and the scope of the eavesdropping had to be narrow and directly related to suspected criminal activity (based on evidence already obtained). it wasn't some liberal's dream, it was a reaction to years of abuse of power and damage caused to innocent folks. that's where we're headed once again.

what to do? how about fire condoleezza rice? she was warned, in person and in writing, that 9/11 was coming, and she decided it wasn't an imminent threat. the intelligence agencies didn't work well, but they worked well enough to permit 9/11 to be avoided, if anybody in power had listened. we don't need to give up rights, we need some competent people making decisions. just look at the last round of funding decisions by homeland security - all based on (successful) attempts by state governments to grab a piece of the federal money handout, by submitting exaggerated lists of "targets" for terrorism (like state fairs and garden shows). so new york and washington got less funding, while louisville and omaha made out like bandits. not to mention how completely fubar'd fema has become. or the thousands of dead and wounded soldiers - and undermining recruiting for the next 10 years at least - to make iraq into a good training ground for terrorists (the administration's own agency said the iraq disaster has created more terrorists, not less).

we've got everything we need, already, to fight terrorism. we just need some people with brains and integrity to run the show. when was the last time that happened?
