Very old news - these clips have been circulating around town for years - but still amazing. What a complete nutjob. And while she hardly seems blameless as mentioned earlier, it is his job to manage things - and they are clearly out of control here.
The director lost control of the set. Not good. While you want to remain in firm control of the people there, you have to remember that they are neither your slaves or your puppets. From his work I have only watch the three kings, and liked it, but I believe he would be a better and more efficient director if he could control himself better. I am not saying he did not have a good reason to be angry, I am saying that he should not have lost control over the whole thing.
Can an employer yell people like that legally? I would think that would be some sort of harrassment suit or some crap. Either way I would have beat him about the head and then quit.

ok, so i agree with others...i don't think russell is completely to blame. as much as i love lily tomlin, she was being a bit of a bitch and should have acted a bit more professional...that being said, the director sets the level of professionalism he expects on set...russell is a notorious prick and lily's bitching at the beginning may have been the result of something we hadn't seen previously. in any case, he should have controlled his anger and defused the situation instead of throwing wood onto the fire.

It's called video assist and it lets everyone watch what the film camera is filming. If you ever see people watching a tv on a film set, this is what their watching at the " video village".

Lily Tomlin is a big star and it would be a scandal if she were fired from a movie. She knows she can probably get away with everything. Russell, on the other hand, is not a household name and could be replaced in a pinch. It's more likely that Tomlin, and not Russell, had the attitude "I can be difficult and treat people like crap and get away with it." She's also the only one I see complaining.
Naomi Watts and Mark Wahlberg are in the back seat and Lilly hears Naomi laugh, so that is why Lilly said " fuck you, too ". The person crouching by the door is a camera assistant. One of her jobs is to put down tape marks on the floor so each actor can " hit their mark". When this video first came out a few years ago many camera assistants were e-mailing it to each other because they saw one of the own get hit by the flying books.

Obviously this director had been using the cast and crew hard because he wasn't prepared, and he was making too many off- the cuff changes to the script. Lily was griping because she's the only person who can say * because she is irreplaceable. A good director would have addressed her concerns long before she started muttering to herself with distress.The director had a meltdown because he all of a sudden realized that he had lost the respect of his crew and therefore was losing control over the film.
It's like those classic studies of the dynamic between nurses and doctors: for the hospitalized patient to get pain medication in the middle of the night, the nurse must hint successfully to the doctor what the issue is, without actually saying, what dosage and what med, and the doctor must prescribe based on her hints. Doctors who are too arrogant to hear the nurses' hints are flying blind, and the patient lies in pain all night.
The director should have taken Lily's gripings as real distress from a pro who is being pushed and pulled randomly by someone who doesn't know what they want. He should have taken a break from the shoot and figured out what he wanted from them, or gotten some wage slaves to help him visualize the blocking, not Lily F'n Tomlin.
what the fuck are you talking about nurses have to hint to doctors to get pain medications for patients??? when i got my appendix out, no nurse had to do any fucking hinting. i said i am in paid, nurse called doctor, doctor came in. i said to him i was in pain, he came back with medication. when i broke my foot last month, i told a nurse i was in pain. she asked for painkillers from the doctor right in front of me. What the fuck are you going on about???????

George Clooney got into a fist fight with David on the set of the Three Kings (because David was abusing one of the film extras)...David grabbed Mark Walhberg's privates during filming I Heart Huckabees...David was unpredictable- he'd be yelling and screaming one minute, then he would take off his clothes, right on down to his boxers and start working out on set- then he'd whisper sexual harrasing remarks into the female cast members ears right before they rolled...then he would drop to the floor and act like a child while filming the movie! (I encourage you to google The New York Times article on what a piece of work David is!) So, now that I did my research...I would have beat that man's ass if I was Lilly, or anyone for that matter. I hope George Clooney hurt him bad! I'm sure George is laughing his ass off that these tapes have been leaked to the public. What goes around CAME!!!!
