That's perfectly healthy and normal to breastfeed that long. She should stop in a couple of months. It's really healthy for a baby to breastfeed as long as possible.
It's always best to go at least a year. She's doing the right thing. Good for her, good for Kingston. Britney Spears had her nannies feeding both of her kids formula from day one.
Gee, when his teeF are cutting your nips, it may be time to pass him a juice box Gwen. Puhleese. The "oh-its-natural" granola moms make me want to hurl. No doubt (i made a pun!) she's doing it to keep herself skinny and her boobs bigger.
A year is the perfect amount of time to breast feed. Kids who are breast fed at least a year are less likely to be obese, less likely to get sick and are less likely to suffer from allergies.
And it will keep those sweater puppies nice and plump!
It's time to quit when your baby is nursing, looks down, sees that you've just started your period, then slaps his forehead and says "I could have had a V8!"
I nursed for two years and several of my friends have gone longer. For fucks sake people, grow up!!! The US is the only country where people are so backward that they associate breasts with sexuality. Just because your momma didn't nurse you don't hate on those of us who chose the right and healthy way to feed and bond with our child(ren).
The World Health Organization and numerous pediatric associations recommend breastfeeding for two years.
Not all kids can tolerate cow's milk at one year. It's made for cows, in fact - imagine that! And juice? Basically sugar water with no nutritional value unless it's citrus, which many one year olds also cannot tolerate.
I'm not even going to pretend like i don't have a HUGE erection from reading this. I think this is all Gavin's idea because the dude is secretly a big perv. Likes drinking from the tap, named his band "Bush," get the idea?
Oh and by the way, "Nursing moms Unite!!" You're fucking nuts. A year is pushing it, two years is way too long and longer than that is just plain wrong.
Anon 11:15:52 hit it right on the head. I mean, when a kid's teeth start coming in, I think that's nature's way of saying, "Get that kid off your titty all-fucking-ready!!"
As for Anon 11:35:14, you just need to STFU. Two years? What if the kid wants to keep chomping on that thing until he's six? Are you going to let him? You're obviously one of those granola-crunching, hairy-arm-pitted, Birkenstock-wearing bitches that whips her humoungous milky tit out wherever she pleases and thinks everyone wants to see it. Ugh. I hate your type. And tits ARE sexual, stupid.
Good Lord, now we're going to start the breastfeeding debate on this site. "Right and healthy way" -- like the other way of feeding and bonding with a child is the WRONG way. Blah blah blah. I REALLY doubt she is still bfing -- at least not exclusively. I just don't see it -- her boobs are too small.
"time for the kid to get his milk from a carton"? So.... he should drink milk from a friggin cow's mom, but not from his own mother, who is of the same species? yeah, that makes sense....
A year is perfectly normal, she might want to wean him in the day at this point since he can eat anything, including eggs, now taht he's a year. Night nursing may continue up until two years and is not unsual.

Only someone without kids would tag those who do have them and know what they are talking about as "granola." ANY mom will tell you that the recomended time to nurse is 1 year, and tons of people do it longer, people who are not hippies. There's nothing wrong with Gwen going a little longer.

WHO, World Health Organization, recommends nursing for 2 years and the APA recommends a minimum of a year. My child won't drink a lot of cow's milk, never took formula, so my doctor wants me to continue to nurse her until I can get her to drink more than 4 oz. of milk a day or she's two and her fat needs decrease. Last time I checked I didn't eat granola either.
Hey, I love your site & read it all the time, but nothing wrong with a one-year-old still nursing. Nice to see a celebrity putting her kid's well-being above her fears of boobie damage.
no big deal that she's still nursing- totally normal. He probably still needs the security/bonding considering they are stalked everywhere they go. That HAS to freak the baby out somewhat.
I know a lot of mothers nurse well past a year old - I mean they still have milk for a reason - but I would think they would just BOTTLE their milk when the kid has teeth. Silly Gwen -_-
World health org states that mothers should breast feed for a least two years... grow up, making fun of celebrities for breast feeding for one year is so boring...... it's not just for "hippies"..... most moms breastfeed now (in Canada), I've hardly met and mom's that give formula, and the ones that do try to hide it or feel bad about it......
I agree, 'Nursing moms Unite!!!'. Americans are so backwards when it comes to breastfeeding. That's what breasts are for! People who don't support moms who breastfeed are idiots. Not only is it healthier for the child, it's healthier for the mom. Why would someone choose formula or hormone-filled cow's milk, when you have the real stuff on your own. It's nutritious, economical, and much more convenient. Nurse on!
Seriously - if you breastfeed your kid that long, it is a proven fact that he will be a pussy. No klid who sucks mommy's teet that long ever grows a pair. They have mommy issues all their life, which inevitably culminate in a three way with Richard Simmons and George Michael.
If you are breastfeeding your kid after 1 year - stop.

The optimum time for breastfeeding is 18 months. This is best for the child and the mother, the child is generally healthier and there is the chance of the mother getting breast cancer decreases.
"commenting on People and Page Six articles that pull out one of the below quotes from the original article and say Gwen is still nursing. This is untrue -- it's just another case of the media taking quotes out of context.
If they read the Observer article closely, they would see the quote is from the author's conversation with Gwen before her tour started -- back at the beginning of April! As Gwen said many times this past week while doing radio station interviews in Australia, she nursed Kingston for 13 months and just stopped a few weeks ago, in July."
She is probably only still doing it because for the first time in her life her body looks like a womans. She just doesn't want to lose those tittays. She had mosquito bites before so once she stops they'll look like an orange in a sock.
The World Health Organization now recommends nursing for at least 24 months. As the mother of a 27 month old nursling, I am thrilled to see breastfeeding in the spotlight. I'm equally appalled at the sheer ignorance in this society-of-convenience. If you're not willing to tend to the long-term needs of your child, then DON'T HAVE ONE, Assbags!
11:32:54, yeah you do get your period when your nursing. I just had my fourth child and nursed the first 3 till 12 months. you can also get pregnant while breast feeding. I did too damn lying ass backwards doctors.
The American Pediatric Association recommends breastfeeding at least a year and longer if possible. You breastfeeding haters need to grow up and stop being so judgemental. You obviously aren't knowledgable about child nutrition. Close-minded haters.
the WHO(world health organization) reccommends breastfeeding for a MINIMUM of 2 years, and after that as long as it is mutually desired. i am currently nursing my 3rd daughter, i guess i am one of those "crunchy granola chicks" because she will wean when she wants to, just as my first 2 did. rock on gwen! you are doing the right thing!
Way to go *nursing moms unite*!!! I totally believe in equality for everyone...afterall this IS America. It just makes me sick that our mothers continue to be attack for either nursing or not. The most important thing is to do what's best for mother and child and people need to keep their minds out of the gutter. We should be supporting parents and encouraging them in whatever method they choose to feed and bond with their children as long as it is safe and moral. What this world needs is a lot more love and concern for each other and not this constant putdown of people that may do things a little different than the way we were raised or how we have chosen to live our own lives.
more women should be doing this!! sorry if it makes you uncomfortable or weirds you out, but it's what's best for the baby and gwen should stop when she feels that it's right.
So happy J-Bird left that witty comment. It almost took my attention off how slow some people are about nursing. You know what makes me want to "hurl"? The thought of feeding my children milk from another SPECIES. Oh no, now that is totally "natural". You always see puppies nursing from cows, just the way nature intended. I guess I am granola mom, but this granola mom also holds her MD in General Pediatrics from Yale U..
Enough with the WHO statistics. What did you retards all do a google search and paste the findings to your posts? Who freakin cares!!!! Do what you damn well please, dear sweet God. Forget granola eating, these women are the helicopter moms who form their little cliques in the PTA. No one gives a shit. Get a life ladies.
human breastmilk is for human babies. duh. cows milk is for cow babies. i think gwen also uses cloth diapers which is awesome. better to have nice soft cloth on a babies but than chemical filled paper. nursing mothers unite!!!
Ahem, what do you think of Michael Jordan? His mother nursed him for -gasp- 3 years, and obviously, he is no pussy. He turned out to be one of the greatest basketball players, ever. Stop being mindless sheep that feed on the narrow-minded attitudes directed towards boobs and nursing.
I'm no granola -hippie but I did nurse both of my kids for 2 years. The 2nd year, as mentioned earlier, is only night nursing. It gets them to sleep and if you've ever had a baby that won't go to sleep it is the simplest and easiest way to know you'll get your break, not to mention healthy for the baby. It doesn't mean the woman whips her tits out in fromt of God and everybody and starts letting a 2 year old go to town, though all you people who find boobs "sexual" might love that idea... ick!
20:41: Don't be silly. Nursing is but one "small" component of the 18-year parenting span, but it's important in many ways during the first years. Such as reducing risks for allergies, obesity, diabetes, etc. Still, parents who helicopter-parent young adults today don't always breast-feed. If you think about it, the breastfeeding rates from 0 to 12 months, let alone beyond 1 year, are still dismally low in a lot of U.S. states. So, your so-called logic doesn't fly here, and you are being a retard who can't even analyze the data objectively.
21:18: Um okay. What was my logic? Also, what data was I allegedly analyzing? Read over what I wrote before you comment. You missed the point you moron. Try again, maybe you'll get it the second time.
Michael Jordan is a huge pussy. That's why he ran away like a bitch from the mob and "retired" the first time in the NBA, and played minor league baseball. If he hadn't been breastfed until 3, he would have stood up to the mafioso and killed them all Scarface style.
I know a chick whose kid is 4 and still breastfeeds. Her little boy likes dressing in mommies clothes and is always concerned about how his hair looks. It's sad to see a 4 year destined for a life of ass kickings and making mouth love to other dudes.
THANK YOU 19:32!!!! Amen!! And YES 20:41 hit it on the head -- helicopter moms!!! And folks, quit quoting the World Health Organization -- good freaking lord. I think it's great if someone breast feeds as long as they want -- just STOP with the holier-than-thou speak if you choose to do it. It does NOT make you a better mom and it does NOT make your child any better either. See how you get these moms riled up when you bring this shit up???????
A breast feeding debate on a gossip site, love it!
Apparently Gwen stopped at 13 months, which is NORMAL and doctor recommended (you should nurse for a year if you can but everyone is different). If you have issues with nursing being gross, you obviously don't have children or you're uninformed. As much as we sexualize them, boobies are really intended to feed babies.
I don't know any one year old who can get up, walk to the frig, open it, take out a juice box, and grab a lunchable, then open them, then eat them and drink the juice, after stabbing the little straw in the hole. Whoever wrote this is an ass.
The World Health Organization recommeds that children be breast-fed exclusively for the first 6 months of their lives and continued breastfeeding at least to 2 years of age or longer (http://www.who.int/nutrition/topics/exclusive_breastfeeding/en/index.html). A child has no imune system when they are born and the imune system isn't fully developed until they are 5 years of age. They are dependant on the mothers breast milk for their imune system for the first years of their lives. Also, breast milk increases cognitive development in the child.
Breast feeding also reduces risks in women for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. I'm glad to see someone as high profile as Gwen Stephani promoting breastfeeding.
Stop spouting off about things you don't know anything about and percipitating the "ignorant American" image.
I know this is scary shit; well it scared the shit out of me since I'm a girl, but I was recently put in my place because it's actually recommended by the WHO that kids be allowed to breast fid till they're like 3 years old!
Yay for breast feeding! I breast fed my son until he was 2 and 2 months old, (he was only nursing to take naps at this point though) but I was forced to stop due to my wisdom teeth being removed and getting a job after not having one for a while (father and I felt this was best for him to have me here to take care of him.)
besides. isn't it Gwens choice to feed her child as SHE see's fit? Yeah I thought so. Let her do what she wants. At least she's not being neglectful like Brittany Spears is...
Breastfeeding is awesome. My daughter is 18 months and is still nursing! I feel sorry for those people that are unaware of the benefits it brings to the child and mother. Good for Gwen, she should be very proud.
anonymous 13:02 wrote Stop spouting off about things you don't know anything about and percipitating the "ignorant American" image. "Percipitating", WTF does that mean? YOU are the IGNORANT american, dickhead! Tell me more about what you don't know, ha ha!
whitetrash- ooo, you caught a spelling mistake, boy you showed anon 13:02 who's smarter and more informed. Hmm, somehow, though, I think you're still the dumbass.
It's not a spelling mistake, 10:05. "Percipitating" is not a word. I think the word she was looking for was "perpetuating". Pointing this out makes me a dumbass because...? Boo hoo I'm so hurt.Where's mommy's titty so I can console myself?

Um, it's pretty normal to breastfeed for a year. Two years is on the cusp of being a tad strange though.

Yes - It's healthier for mother and baby to nurse past one year.
No - You can, and often do, get your period while nursing. You can also get pregnant.
No - Cow's milk is hard for most human kids to digest and introducing it too early can cause a dairy allergy.

no big deal that she's still nursing- totally normal. He probably still needs the security/bonding considering they are stalked everywhere they go. That HAS to freak the baby out somewhat.
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 16:07:17
I know a lot of mothers nurse well past a year old - I mean they still have milk for a reason - but I would think they would just BOTTLE their milk when the kid has teeth. Silly Gwen -_-
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 16:16:37
Erm, a year is healthy to breastfeed but after that it's no longer necessary and breastfeeding a toddler is kind of creepy above poster ...
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 16:17:11
great... now your getting all the boob nazi's all roused up.
GO BOTTLE FEEDING!
By geekgoddess, on August 7, 2007 16:19:08
World health org states that mothers should breast feed for a least two years... grow up, making fun of celebrities for breast feeding for one year is so boring...... it's not just for "hippies"..... most moms breastfeed now (in Canada), I've hardly met and mom's that give formula, and the ones that do try to hide it or feel bad about it......
By boobs, on August 7, 2007 16:29:44
I agree, 'Nursing moms Unite!!!'. Americans are so backwards when it comes to breastfeeding. That's what breasts are for! People who don't support moms who breastfeed are idiots. Not only is it healthier for the child, it's healthier for the mom. Why would someone choose formula or hormone-filled cow's milk, when you have the real stuff on your own. It's nutritious, economical, and much more convenient. Nurse on!

The World Health Organization recommends that babies be breast fed for the first two years.
By anon, on August 7, 2007 17:13:04
actually she stopped breastfeeding when he was 13 months old.
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 17:13:32
I'll take his place.

Nursing is perverted!
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 17:58:55

By Pennyroyal, on August 7, 2007 18:26:56
The World Health Organization now recommends nursing for at least 24 months. As the mother of a 27 month old nursling, I am thrilled to see breastfeeding in the spotlight. I'm equally appalled at the sheer ignorance in this society-of-convenience. If you're not willing to tend to the long-term needs of your child, then DON'T HAVE ONE, Assbags!
By Corrina , on August 7, 2007 18:31:29
11:32:54, yeah you do get your period when your nursing. I just had my fourth child and nursed the first 3 till 12 months. you can also get pregnant while breast feeding. I did too damn lying ass backwards doctors.
By NubianGoddez, on August 7, 2007 18:48:42
The American Pediatric Association recommends breastfeeding at least a year and longer if possible. You breastfeeding haters need to grow up and stop being so judgemental. You obviously aren't knowledgable about child nutrition. Close-minded haters.
By AnnGee, on August 7, 2007 19:13:23
the WHO(world health organization) reccommends breastfeeding for a MINIMUM of 2 years, and after that as long as it is mutually desired. i am currently nursing my 3rd daughter, i guess i am one of those "crunchy granola chicks" because she will wean when she wants to, just as my first 2 did. rock on gwen! you are doing the right thing!
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 19:15:07
Way to go *nursing moms unite*!!! I totally believe in equality for everyone...afterall this IS America. It just makes me sick that our mothers continue to be attack for either nursing or not. The most important thing is to do what's best for mother and child and people need to keep their minds out of the gutter. We should be supporting parents and encouraging them in whatever method they choose to feed and bond with their children as long as it is safe and moral. What this world needs is a lot more love and concern for each other and not this constant putdown of people that may do things a little different than the way we were raised or how we have chosen to live our own lives.
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 19:32:39
WTF...Wait...I'm confused. Don't you have to have tits to nurse?
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 19:37:05
more women should be doing this!! sorry if it makes you uncomfortable or weirds you out, but it's what's best for the baby and gwen should stop when she feels that it's right.
By dirtyandsmiling, on August 7, 2007 19:58:36
Stick with what you know. A year to 18 months is normal for breast-feeding.
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 20:05:20
So happy J-Bird left that witty comment. It almost took my attention off how slow some people are about nursing. You know what makes me want to "hurl"? The thought of feeding my children milk from another SPECIES. Oh no, now that is totally "natural". You always see puppies nursing from cows, just the way nature intended. I guess I am granola mom, but this granola mom also holds her MD in General Pediatrics from Yale U..
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 20:39:07
Enough with the WHO statistics. What did you retards all do a google search and paste the findings to your posts? Who freakin cares!!!! Do what you damn well please, dear sweet God. Forget granola eating, these women are the helicopter moms who form their little cliques in the PTA. No one gives a shit. Get a life ladies.
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 20:41:33
human breastmilk is for human babies. duh. cows milk is for cow babies. i think gwen also uses cloth diapers which is awesome. better to have nice soft cloth on a babies but than chemical filled paper. nursing mothers unite!!!
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 20:55:16
Ahem, what do you think of Michael Jordan? His mother nursed him for -gasp- 3 years, and obviously, he is no pussy. He turned out to be one of the greatest basketball players, ever. Stop being mindless sheep that feed on the narrow-minded attitudes directed towards boobs and nursing.
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 21:05:12
I'm no granola -hippie but I did nurse both of my kids for 2 years. The 2nd year, as mentioned earlier, is only night nursing. It gets them to sleep and if you've ever had a baby that won't go to sleep it is the simplest and easiest way to know you'll get your break, not to mention healthy for the baby. It doesn't mean the woman whips her tits out in fromt of God and everybody and starts letting a 2 year old go to town, though all you people who find boobs "sexual" might love that idea... ick!
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 21:06:52
20:41: Don't be silly. Nursing is but one "small" component of the 18-year parenting span, but it's important in many ways during the first years. Such as reducing risks for allergies, obesity, diabetes, etc. Still, parents who helicopter-parent young adults today don't always breast-feed. If you think about it, the breastfeeding rates from 0 to 12 months, let alone beyond 1 year, are still dismally low in a lot of U.S. states. So, your so-called logic doesn't fly here, and you are being a retard who can't even analyze the data objectively.
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 21:18:00
21:18: Um okay. What was my logic? Also, what data was I allegedly analyzing? Read over what I wrote before you comment. You missed the point you moron. Try again, maybe you'll get it the second time.
By anonymous, on August 7, 2007 23:23:19
Michael Jordan is a huge pussy. That's why he ran away like a bitch from the mob and "retired" the first time in the NBA, and played minor league baseball. If he hadn't been breastfed until 3, he would have stood up to the mafioso and killed them all Scarface style.
I know a chick whose kid is 4 and still breastfeeds. Her little boy likes dressing in mommies clothes and is always concerned about how his hair looks. It's sad to see a 4 year destined for a life of ass kickings and making mouth love to other dudes.
By anonymous, on August 8, 2007 04:24:06

More people need to breastfeed, especially in the US, read this article from this week -http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20161360/
By house frau, on August 8, 2007 08:53:01
we are mammals too. let em suck till he's 12 if he wants. shit, I did.
By breasts are great., on August 8, 2007 09:20:31
I don't know any one year old who can get up, walk to the frig, open it, take out a juice box, and grab a lunchable, then open them, then eat them and drink the juice, after stabbing the little straw in the hole. Whoever wrote this is an ass.
By GMark, on August 8, 2007 12:44:02

Breastfeeding is good for the kid. If it isn't uncomfortable and they both enjoy it - keep it up. I love it.
By anonymous, on August 8, 2007 16:01:49
I know this is scary shit; well it scared the shit out of me since I'm a girl, but I was recently put in my place because it's actually recommended by the WHO that kids be allowed to breast fid till they're like 3 years old!
By anonymous, on August 8, 2007 16:22:24
Yay for breast feeding! I breast fed my son until he was 2 and 2 months old, (he was only nursing to take naps at this point though) but I was forced to stop due to my wisdom teeth being removed and getting a job after not having one for a while (father and I felt this was best for him to have me here to take care of him.)
besides. isn't it Gwens choice to feed her child as SHE see's fit? Yeah I thought so. Let her do what she wants. At least she's not being neglectful like Brittany Spears is...
By Jibba, on August 8, 2007 16:55:17
Breastfeeding is awesome. My daughter is 18 months and is still nursing! I feel sorry for those people that are unaware of the benefits it brings to the child and mother. Good for Gwen, she should be very proud.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing out of the ordinary about breastfeeding a 1 year old. Even for Gwen Stefani.
By pete, on August 9, 2007 09:49:36
whitetrash- ooo, you caught a spelling mistake, boy you showed anon 13:02 who's smarter and more informed. Hmm, somehow, though, I think you're still the dumbass.
By anonymous, on August 9, 2007 10:05:23
It's not a spelling mistake, 10:05. "Percipitating" is not a word. I think the word she was looking for was "perpetuating". Pointing this out makes me a dumbass because...? Boo hoo I'm so hurt.Where's mommy's titty so I can console myself?
By whitetrash, on August 9, 2007 15:28:28
percipitating may not be but precipitating is a word.
