None of my relatives were white and rich enough to own slaves in this country. They were all European immigrants who were shit poor too. I'm black myself and strangely I can sort of relate to what she was saying, she just presented it in a lackadaisical way. Blacks in America do need to start taking more responsibility for their actions and behavior but I think America only gets to see a small picture of some of the injustices that take place. Every story of an innocent black male who gets wrongfully arrested and beaten by the cops isn't televised, just as every story of the poor white farmer who has his land taken by the government and is left with nothing isn't either.
My point is to say that though some people do need to stop blaming EVERY problem on racism, classism sexism, etc these problems are changing but DO still exist and it's easy for people who've never gone through it, regardless of race or background, to say "Get over it".
...and as a side note, other cultures do have months devoted to sharing their history. Black history month is the only one that gets nationally recognized and scrutinized universally, I wonder why that is?...

Re: 16:18 - I was a poor white guy, and I didn't get accepted to universities back in my day, but black people with average 2.8 GPAs got in free to the same universities I applied to since they were awarded for being black because of affirmative action and scholarships which gave them free rides because of the color of their skin. I got denied because I was a white guy with no money and a 3.8 GPA, and neither my family nor I had the credit for student loans of scholarships which paid enough to cover me getting in, so I was downgraded to junior city college - because of the color of my skin.

I’m not black and I’m not threatened in the lest bit that black people want to celebrate their heritage just like I’m not threatened when Italians, Irish, Puerto Rican etc have special days where they have parades and celebrate the pride they have in their heritage.

I have seen people of nationalities get together and celebrate Saint Patrick's Day (which is a religious holiday in Ireland) but HELL if we let the blacks have one month to be proud!

Lets not forget that the Jena 6, by all accounts, beat that kid AFTER one of them were jumped by that kid and his friends at a party. And, after there were very high racial tensions at the school for some time.
And its not like the kid was beaten to within an inch of his life. He was a little scraped up, but he was in and out of the hospital the same day. In fact, there are reports that the kid went back to the same party that night. So how bad was the beating?

I always resented being forced to study black history in February while I was in school. History is history, and there's no good reason to specialize in the history of black people at that time. I would have much rather had a gay history month, but that's where my personal interest lies, and it will NEVER happen in America. Adrianne is exactly right, and I completely agree with her. As long as people continue to think that equal rights mean special and unique right, there will always be racism, sexism, etc. Equal rights means you treat everyone equally.

Pay stubs - almost. Archaeologists excavating the city built for the workers over the last couple decades have found the permanent workers were housed and fed in the best manner possible, not at all like the treatment of slaves at the time.
The revolving gangs of temporary workers they know about from graffiti in & around the sites were fed as well. The latest theories are that work on the pyramids was something like a religious obligation.

Racism is alive and well. Reading these comments reaffirms that most of white America is clueless when it comes to racism. Their "get over it" attitude shows how ignorant they are to the realities that people of color face in this society on a daily basis. Lynchings and segregation are not something that happened hundreds of years ago. Many of these people who witnessed or were a part of it are still alive today. I am 33 and still experience racism daily. I am hardly sensitive, but it can be so blatant that it's mind blowing at times. My saving grace is that I am college educated, so I can put people in their place quickly. Don't be so quick to say that racism doesn't exist. It is alive and well today in America. I study racial inequality and Whites' perceptions of racial inequality at Stanford University. I am White. My studies have opened my eyes to the fact that Blacks in America still face discrimination--not just racial prejudice from individual Whites, but the more sinister structural discrimination that can make it impossible for even hardworking Blacks to move up in our society. The fact is, Blacks in America are still denied jobs, racially profiled by police officers, get harsher punishments for crimes (juries give Blacks harsher punishments than Whites regardless of their offenses), have a harder time getting loans (regardless of credit, etc.), and have become segregated in communities that have poor school systems because of the White flight from urban areas (etc., etc.,). And most importantly, Whites, who occupy most positions of power in the United States and therefor have control over its public policy, have skewed perceptions of inequality. A large-scale study of U.S. citizens recently found that Whites do not believe that Blacks face discrimination (despite very clear evidence of structural discrimination) and hugely underestimate the extent to which Whites are advantaged economically.
The debate now (which we can see in the Supreme Court, over affirmative action in schools and public contracts) is over how we want to make our society equal. Most Americans believe that individuals should succeed by their own merit. However, there are two routes we can take in order to ensure our country is a meritocracy. Basically, there is colorblindness as a means and colorblindness as an end. Do we hope that someday everyone in America will have an equal chance? If this is the case, then our government should enact color-conscious policies that will help Blacks and other minorities succeed in the face of structural discrimination. On the other hand, we can decide that colorblindness as a means is more important--that is, that all of our policies should be colorblind, and that there should be nothing like affirmative action because it takes race into account. The problem with colorblind policies is that they preclude the possibility that Blacks will have equal chances for success in the future.
If we truly want America to be a free country where people succeed by merit, and not because of their race, then we need to have color-conscious policies. Think about a marathon. If two runners start the race at different points, one closer to the finish line and one farther from it, and we want both to have an equal chance at winning the race according to merit, we need to have them both start at the same spot. We need to bring Blacks up to the same line that Whites start at. We need to make it so that Black children born in the United States are just as able as White children to succeed.
So, do you want our policies to be colorblind? Should we get rid of affirmative action? This would only mask our current racial inequality and make it impossible to fix. If, instead, we take race into account because of the structural inequalities that Blacks and other minorities face, then we may be able to create the kind of country we would all be proud of.

Dear "c", American History is taught in schools, not "white america[n]" history. It just happens that the people who were involved in the early history of this country (the english pilgrims, spanish conquistadores, etc.) were primarily fair-skinned. American Indians are a big part of that history too because they were the original inhabitants of this land. Darker skinned early inhabitants were brought overseas from Africa by European and other African men who sold them into slavery to the American colonists. Thus, African-Americans (why the distinction, by the way?) were not involved much in the earlier part of American history until you get to the periods of prominent slavery and emancipation.
Can we not just leave race out of the equation altogether and think of one another simply as fellow human beings? The only truly non-racist society would be a color-blind one.
but to be colorblind, i think we need to remedy current racial disparities. after blacks have equal opportunities, then we can have colorblind policies. if we ignore race right now, we will just obscure these inequalities and thus perpetuate them. and haha--good to hear another academic researcher (you, the marketing one) reads celebrity blogs. :) i always find it to be a source of embarrassment.

as far as muslims go, true muslims AREN't violent and many are taken captive by the extremists just like everyone else, for being peaceful. and my mom is white, worked in an inner city hospital as an RN, running away from gangs and getting threatened all the time because she was WHITE, not black or mexican like the majority of people there, even patients, but she stuck it out because she loved helping people. and the blacks she worked with used to make her do all of THEIR work because she was the only white one and threatened to tell the hospital she was a racist if she didnt, and of course they would fire her, supporting 4 kids in her own, because they dont want to face the race issue. and once a black nurse commited FRAUD, she could have went to jail if charges were pressed, but threatened to get the black union together and sue the hospital saying it was a racist issue so they instead REWARDED her, while my mother still got written up for things like: switching a day to work with another nurse, and the other nurse decides not to show up the day she switched for and not tell anyone, my mom gets in trouble, even though she showed up when she was supposed to.

The solution to this problem is a recognition that the chronology of Egypt needs to be reduced by centuries, bringing the 12th dynasty down to the time of Moses and the Exodus. When this is done there is found abundant evidence for the presence of large numbers of Semitic slaves at the time of Moses, the devastation of Egypt and the sudden departure of these slaves.
A reduction of the chronology of Egypt would also be reflected in the interpretation of the archaeological ages in Israel. There is little evidence for an invasion of Palestine at the end of the Late Bronze Period. But at the end of the Early Bronze Period there is evidence of Jericho’s fallen walls and the arrival of a new people with a new culture who should be identified as the invading Israelites under Joshua.

slavery was 150 yrs ago, but blacks didnt have civil right til the later part of the 60's. All during the civil right movement (ended 1965-68, your parents generation) blacks were being lynched and murdered and raped like crazy. Also black werent offered proper education or jobs in the early -mid 1900's so how can parents offer their children anything but the worst America has, when thats all they get. Why do you think so many african americans are poor today, because of a history of not being allowed anything. I'm black myself and strangely I can sort of relate to what she was saying, she just presented it in a lackadaisical way. Blacks in America do need to start taking more responsibility for their actions and behavior but I think America only gets to see a small picture of some of the injustices that take place. Every story of an innocent black male who gets wrongfully arrested and beaten by the cops isn't televised, just as every story of the poor white farmer who has his land taken by the government and is left with nothing isn't either.
My point is to say that though some people do need to stop blaming EVERY problem on racism, classism sexism, etc these problems are changing but DO still exist and it's easy for people who've never gone through it, regardless of race or background, to say "Get over it".
...and as a side note, other cultures do have months devoted to sharing their history. Black history month is the only one that gets nationally recognized and scrutinized universally, I wonder why that is?...

I am black and most black people I know HATE BET. Um so that's nothing new. As for black history month, it is necessary why? because most schools do not have it as pasrt of the curriculum DUH White history is all I grew up learning, I had to learn about African/black history through my parents and self studies.

Slavery: Both sets grandparents came here long after slavery was abolished, they came here legally. They learned English and worked their butts off. Couple of things:
1) I have wanted to be Mrs. Jim for awhile now and even said so on a different thread...maybe an Angelina one...I digress...
2) On affirmative action -- I am sorry to that white guy with the 3.8 that feels wrongly sent to junior college. I agree that affirmative action needs to be tweaked/fixed/whatever; it is not perfect...but without it, those people that got the scholarships would not have been considered at all...even based on merit. Lets not forget that the Jena 6, by all accounts, beat that kid AFTER one of them were jumped by that kid and his friends at a party. And, after there were very high racial tensions at the school for some time.
And its not like the kid was beaten to within an inch of his life. He was a little scraped up, but he was in and out of the hospital the same day. In fact, there are reports that the kid went back to the same party that night. So how bad was the beating?

I always resented being forced to study black history in February while I was in school. History is history, and there's no good reason to specialize in the history of black people at that time. Pay stubs - almost. Archaeologists excavating the city built for the workers over the last couple decades have found the permanent workers were housed and fed in the best manner possible, not at all like the treatment of slaves at the time.

Racism is alive and well. Reading these comments reaffirms that most of white America is clueless when it comes to racism. Their "get over it" attitude shows how ignorant they are to the realities that people of color face in this society on a daily basis. Lynchings and segregation are not something that happened hundreds of years ago. Many of these people who witnessed or were a part of it are still alive today. I study racial inequality and Whites' perceptions of racial inequality at Stanford University. I am White. My studies have opened my eyes to the fact that Blacks in America still face discrimination--not just racial prejudice from individual Whites, but the more sinister structural discrimination that can make it impossible for even hardworking Blacks to move up in our society. The fact is, Blacks in America are still denied jobs, racially profiled by police officers, get harsher punishments for crimes (juries give Blacks harsher punishments than Whites regardless of their offenses), have a harder time getting loans (regardless of credit, etc.), and have become segregated in communities that have poor school systems because of the White flight from urban areas (etc., etc.,). And most importantly, Whites, who occupy most positions of power in the United States and therefor have control over its public policy, have skewed perceptions of inequality. A large-scale study of U.S. citizens recently found that Whites do not believe that Blacks face discrimination (despite very clear evidence of structural discrimination) and hugely underestimate the extent to which Whites are advantaged economically.
The debate now (which we can see in the Supreme Court, over affirmative action in schools and public contracts) is over how we want to make our society equal. Most Americans believe that individuals should succeed by their own merit. However, there are two routes we can take in order to ensure our country is a meritocracy. Basically, there is colorblindness as a means and colorblindness as an end. Do we hope that someday everyone in America will have an equal chance? If this is the case, then our government should enact color-conscious policies that will help Blacks and other minorities succeed in the face of structural discrimination. On the other hand, we can decide that colorblindness as a means is more important--that is, that all of our policies should be colorblind, and that there should be nothing like affirmative action because it takes race into account. The problem with colorblind policies is that they preclude the possibility that Blacks will have equal chances for success in the future.
If we truly want America to be a free country where people succeed by merit, and not because of their race, then we need to have color-conscious policies. Think about a marathon. If two runners start the race at different points, one closer to the finish line and one farther from it, and we want both to have an equal chance at winning the race according to merit, we need to have them both start at the same spot. We need to bring Blacks up to the same line that Whites start at. We need to make it so that Black children born in the United States are just as able as White children to succeed.
So, do you want our policies to be colorblind? Should we get rid of affirmative action? This would only mask our current racial inequality and make it impossible to fix. If, instead, we take race into account because of the structural inequalities that Blacks and other minorities face, then we may be able to create the kind of country we would all be proud of.

American History is taught in schools, not "white america[n]" history. It just happens that the people who were involved in the early history of this country (the english pilgrims, spanish conquistadores, etc.) were primarily fair-skinned. American Indians are a big part of that history too because they were the original inhabitants of this land. Darker skinned early inhabitants were brought overseas from Africa by European and other African men who sold them into slavery to the American colonists. Thus, African-Americans (why the distinction, by the way?) were not involved much in the earlier part of American history until you get to the periods of prominent slavery and emancipation.
