People are just sick of his bullshit. I used to enjoy his movies but his last couple of flicks have been teh suck, there's no quality and I'm tired of him pimping that stoopid cult he belongs too.
I agree that Cruse is a first rate nut job, but the failure of this movie isn't his, it's Redford's. He's the one pushing the anti-American agitprop down the throats of moviegoers. People get enough bad news about the war on the evening news, they don't need to pay $8 to have some pampered liberal living in la la land preaching to them from the big screen.
I dunno, maybe the movie bombed because the alternative media has made competing views accessible: The one-track conventional wisdom re: how people should think is dead and gone, unlike the days of "All the President's Men."
I hate Cruise as much as everyone else, but this movie bombing has more to do with it being a political movie than it does with him. All movies with a political slant are bombing.
He's tried to use his personal relationships as media fodder and promotion, and he's revealed entirely too much that hasn't gone over well. He's clearly a megalomaniac and he's given everyone tons of behavioral evidence to see him as a sociopath. I'd say this isn't how he planned things.
anti-American agitprop... pampered liberal living in la la land...
Dick? Dick Nixon? Is that you? I thought you were dead, but it seems you've recovered. Good on ya! By the bye, don't forget to talk about "limousine liberals," "freedom haters," and "Hollywierd" next time. Maybe throw in a little about the "radical homosexual lifestyle" while you're at it.
A horse named "Tom Cruise" or a unicorn named "Tom Cruise?" There's already a unicorn I find much more entertaining than the real TC. http://www.planetunicorn.tv/episodes.html
The timing was wrong. It's a simple formula - wait a few years after an unpopular war ends, then write a movie that shows how the war was horrible for both soldiers and civilians. Make sure you center the movie on a revisionist fantasy about a small group of soldiers behaving according to the highest ideals, making sacrifices and dying heroically while achieving a clear and worthy goal. Audience cries, cheers. We all feel better. Repeat as necessary.
First, idiot at 9:31, fuck off with the "anti-American" shit. Second, to the person who thinks this is Redford's failure - well, maybe. I just came from a politics website where many of the readers said they were turned off by Tom Cruise being in the movie.
Catman, 9:31's post did not seem anti-american to me.
Just anti-tom and anti-scientologists and hollywood liberal fucksticks. Hopefully all of that nutjobs movies will bomb, and hollywood will realize that most of America does not want liberal politics spewed from their movie screens at every goddamn film. Oh wait? Did they already decide that...right, since nobodies watching this film now that we all know the material.
Anon @10:37: A big "fuck off" to you too. Try putting together an argument for your opinion rather than attacking the speaker. Anon @10:49: I was objecting to 9:31's use of the phrase "anti-American agitprop," not calling the comment anti-American. The comment didn't seem anti-American, just really ignorant.
Right on 09:31:39... Has anyone seen Katie's SHOES??? If you can call them that...she's gone to wearing barely anything so she's not taller than him on the red carpet...gag me.
what's up with the most blatant misuse of the word "litarally" ("tom cruises latest flick got stung at the box office. literally"). Um, no, unless a bee literally stung a print of the film, this did not happen.
When you fuck up the use of that word, you fuck it up so bad, you've used it in the OPPOSITE manner for which it was intended.
I find Tom very sexy and I enjoyed his film this past weekend. I sat next to PeeWee Herman and we had our own personal circle jerk anytime that sexy Tom was on the screen. This movie rocked!
Isn't it obvious, Tom cruise is an alien... I mean look at his face, Its like that scene in Men in Black where that alien crash lands in that farmer dude's yard and uses his skin as a flesh coat and walks around all awkwardly.
The fact of the matter is that Americans simply don't want to shell out 11 bucks to see a movie that villifies their troops, many of whom have served 2-3 tours in iraq, on Veterans Day! How about a movie that shows the courage exhibited by the medal of honor winners from this war.
Never mind his damned movie and who gives a shit about him playing in a movie about Hitler? He's already a little Hitler so I don't give a rat's arse. lol
I'm looking forward to Andrew Morton's unauthorized biography of the gay midget when it comes out middle of January. :-) Morton's all lawyered up and has already had to move because of the Scientolonuts. lol St. Martin's Press, January 15th me thinks. Should be good! :-)
You dumbass. United Artists has been making movies since the 1940's! Maybe you noticed the United Artists logo on, let's see...ALL the James Bond movies??? (Never say "Never Say Never Again." Just don't.) The company you wanted was Cruise/Wagner. I support your constant lampooning of Tom Cruise, but at least get some facts right.
FYI, from the fabulous wikipedia: United Artists Entertainment LLC (UA)[1][2] is an American film studio. The "new" UA was formed in November 2006 under a partnership between producer/actor Tom Cruise and his production partner, Paula Wagner, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc., an MGM company.
Cruise and Wagner own a small stake in the studio, a subsidiary of MGM Studios. MGM is owned by MGM Holdings, Inc., which was formed by a consortium including Sony, Comcast, TPG Capital, L.P. and Providence Equity Partners.
The movie is NOT anti-American. It simply questions the policies of the invasion of Iraq, which in my opinion was illegal and a terrible decision. So many people make the mistake of patriotism and nationalism. A true patriot questions the political motives of the country, factoring in what is best for it. Nationalism is rahrahrah goooo America! What ever the government does is fine with them. That is what Nazi Germany did.
Peaches, you get an A+ in common sense. Thank you.
As for the person commenting on Katie's DISGUSTING bunion, thanks for making me nauseous! That outfit is hideous and she looks stupid -- like a slave girl obediently following her insane "master". Also she looks more and more like Posh every day (ugh, NOT a compliment!)....
Of course the whole movie was anti-American! I am sick of Hollywood trying to shove their bullshit down our throats - they all became multimillionaires here and then badmouth everything. Move to Planet Xenu Tom, you'll be much happier there
I think the film would have done better if it didnt have Tom Cruise in it. He is unfortunately box office poison now. I don't think the film is doing poorly because of it's anti-war message--it's just very tedious. I think 'Serious' films like this do much better when it is released on DVD. The cost of movies nowdays is ridiculous and people can't afford to attend movies like they used to so they are very choosy now.
I did not compare the U.S. to Nazi Germany but was illustrating that fact that people confuse nationalism with Patriotism and think questioning the U.S. goverment's actions is unPatriotic. That is nationalism, which is what Nazi Germany did. I'm not a socialist and if I was, I wouldn't be ashamed of it. Stop jumping to such ridiculous conclusions and educate yourself. Stop watching Faux news and listening to Limbaugh Hiel Hannity. It is people like you who give other Americans a bad name. It is people like you who would be VERY comfortable living in Nazi Germany but you are just too stupid to realize it. You make me want to PUKE.
This movie did not fail because of Tom. Tom is just trying to get George Cloony level of praise for making Anti-American crap.
