I miss him, too. That was a touching, personal story and he sounds exactly like the kind of guy I would imagine he would be if I'd ever had the chance to meet him myself. Lucky you to have had that experience.
I never understood why Chris Farley felt the need to ever take drugs but wow!! Your story was far more entertaining than anything SNL has shown recently! Thank you, Jenny.
Great story. Honestly, it really almost made me tear up thinking about Chris Farley. I was only about ten years old when he died, but you story made me realize he was exactly the person I thought he was. R.I.P Chris Farley.
I once met a different Chris Farley. A Chris Farley that killed my golden retriever in front of my eyes, and then viciously raped my hairy ass in the bathroom of a Shell gas station on Ventura Blvd. But that's a story for a different day . . . No, seriously - he was out in my neck of the woods for a week once for a wedding and was showing up all over town (and we ain't used to celebrities around here) and I honestly never heard a single word from anyone that ran into him that wasn't absolutely glowing. Why couldn't he live and Paris Hilton die of crabs.
i cried after reading this!im as jaded as you are about the celebrities of our time and how they put themselves on such a pedestal, slapping their name on every product to earn an extra million. its sad that they think they need SO much when people who save lives every day like firemen and policemen are barely making enough to support their families. where im from in canada, people are graduating university with $65,000 in debt with no job to go to. so its nice when you see a celebrity who doesnt take themselves so seriously, and tries to use his fame to make others feel good, and brighten their day a little bit. its sad that he's gone, but this article is a beautiful tribute to him
Thank you for sharing that story. I absolutely love and adore Chris Farley. I was watching his Biography the other Saturday morning and he struck me as a genuinely nice person. I am so glad to hear that he was just that and the stardom didn't seem to have much of an affect on him. It sucks so much ass that he died! It just seems so un-fucking-fair. I always tear up whenever anyone talks about him. I was too little when John Belushi died, but I definitely believe Chris was the Belushi of our generation. You're so lucky to have had the chance to meet him.
Thank yoooouuuu.... *sniff sniff* You always have assumptions about these people being really good at heart and it's nice to get a real affirmation that they were.
I met him on the set of Wayne's World 2. I didn't get to speak with him personally as he was in the midst of a Meatloaf impression as we passed him, but I heard from my kid sister he was funny as Hell. And just as genuine as you say.
Poor bastard. Between him, Hartman and Candy dying in the space of a couple of years...the nineties became a lot less funny.
One of our family traditions is to watch Tommy Boy together on Thanksgiving...don't know why we chose Thanksgiving. We all know EVERY line to the entire movie, so to an outsider it'd probably be annoying - but we love it! For a guy who was apparently so screwed up inside, he sure did (and still does) create a lot of happiness for others. SNL should've gone out while they were on top - with Farley, Sandler, Spade...ah, the good ol' days.
I was just lamenting his passing a couple days ago after seeing a hilarious and rare clip of him from some Tom Arnold special. So young, so brilliant. RIP.
Hmmmm...I was in SB in the mid 90s as well Jenny. Did you go to school there? Are you stalking me?
hmmmm...Chris Farley, and Johnny Depp...well, you're not stuck on a fixed 'type', that's for sure.
About Farley - change the scene from a Starbucks to a bar and you have what killed him. Talk about being the life of a party - people fought to be the first to buy him drinks and...other stuff, as soon as he set foot in the room, and it certainly wasn't in his personality to wall himself off from all that. People compare Belushi and Farley all the time but they couldn't have been more different as people (I can't imagine Farley saying there should be no women on SNL because "women aren't funny", as Belushi said).
whenever i take one of those mysp*ce quizzes, and the question is "what celebrity would you like to meet, dead or alive?" my answer is ALWAYS chris farley. thank you for sharing your story jenny!! you are so lucky to have met him.
That was probably the best thing I have ever read on this site (no disrespect meant to the other writers). I grew up on the early 90's cast of SNL, as well as all of the classic movies they spawned. What an incredible group of comedians . . . Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Norm McDonald, Rob Schneider, Tim Meadows, Phil Hartman, Kevin Nealon, Jon Lovitz, Chris Rock . . . and then there was Farley, head and shoulders above everybody who was on at the time (and who has been on since, yes even Will Ferrel and the other late 90's leaders).
Farley holds a special place in my heart and that of my close friends. We still quote him on a near-daily basis, and his movies are still regulars when we're all just sitting around having a few beers. The world really needs more people like him. Thanks for the awesome story.
The reason SNL is no longer funny is that they don't care about the "Chris Farley fans" of the world anymore. Nowadays they try to make comedy for the cooler-than-thou hipster type crowd, and fail miserably. The show was always intelligent and well-written, but used to also have an appeal to the common guy who was just looking for a few laughs on Saturday night before he went out with his buddies to hit the bars.
That's a great story, you were very lucky to meet who I consider to be the funniest man to ever live and It's also nice to hear that he really was as cool as you would expect him to be. R.I.P. Chris Farley........see you soon!!
ACTUALLY, that wasn't funny at all. Sorry. SNL was funny at one time (not THAT funny, but kinda a little bit funny) but it was WAY before that shit. Pretty much anything with Jimmy Falon in it SUCKS because that loser can't get through a skit without fucking it up by laughing.
If you want to see what sketch comedy looks like when it is actually funny you need to check out Mr. Show or (if you can find it in America) The Mighty Boosh. Now THAT is funny.

well, here in america, we prefer sketch comedy thats funny. Unlike Mr.Show. SNL had made it 25+ yrs for a reason. It has a bad season, the 4 good ones. 3 bad seasons in a row, then 5 good ones in a row. It may not be consistant, but is familiarity that we want.
But I agree with the jimmy falon thing. Hes an annoying twit who thought it was cute to smirk thru fake news.
I hope that story brought a tear to your eye when you were typing/remembering it...cuz it did to mine. Where I live we get the psychos like travolta, K. Alley and the other rich and priveledged as well as the odd wrestler or MMA fighter...they are all predominently DICKS...I'm glad you get to have that wonderful memory.
I love that someone who makes all those smart ass comments, can at the same time still acknowledge the stars out there that we really love and admire... I'm really glad you shared that with us, it was beautiful...
Great story, Jenny. He was the first celebrity that I actually looked up to as a kid that died. I remember not knowing what the big deal was when Princess Diana died and everyone was losing it, but Farley dying when I was 10, that was pretty much my equivalent of a Princess Diana moment.
Sweet story. I miss Chris. I also miss Phil Hartman. They were such talented actors, not like a lot of actors today. I actually had to make an effort not to sit at my desk and cry thinking about Chris and Phil! So depressing.
Seriously, great story. I remember listening to Mancow the day he died and almost every story he had was like yours. Chris deserved his fame because he never acted like he was famous. Thanks for sharing.
damn Jenny, there's a reason I prefer your writing over Todds -- we need more Jenny! You are just as good at the heartfelt, sentimental stuff as you are at the snarky humor.
That was a cute story, thanks for sharing it. It's such a shame that Chris died. I loved his movies (Tommy boy especially!) him and David Spade are friggin' hilarious together.
That's a great and touching story. I live in SB and the celebrities I occasionally see are mostly stuck-up jerks. Nice to hear that at least one was a great guy, and sad that he is no longer around.
That was great, thanks for sharing that. It's always great to once in awhile hear a story of love and respect from you guys -- showing that respect for the select few drives home the point that the rest are assholes.
I never thought he was a brilliant comic but he was funny and you could always tell through his acting that he was a genuinely sweet guy. Watch the clip. See, you can tell that Rob Lowe is a genuine asshole. It bleeds through.
I don't think Jenny's picks are random. Johnny Depp and Chris Farley are both the rare breed of genuine nice people. A very rare find in Hollywood.
It's nice to see a story here like this one! Most of the content here is soooo snarky. Now, I love the snarky, or I would be here!! But this is a nice contrast!! maybe you should do it a bit more.
/but not too much! LOL //Chris was an incredible talent.
Great Story! It choked me up to remember what a wonderful person the world lost. Your story described how I always imagined Chris Farley would be. To this day, Tommy Boy is one of my favorite movies. WE MISS YOU, CHRIS FARLEY! MAY YOU REST IN PEACE!!!
I read this blog daily (well...not when you go dead on the weekends,) and yes, that is the very best thing ever written on here. I never did like John Belushi as a comedian or a person, loathed Chevy Chase (still do.) In response to "I'm Chevy Chase and you're not." Thank God. Early demise of the loved always leaves the survivors wondering, "Why is Tom Cruise on the face of the earth and not in orbit?"
