There may have been thousands of black soldiers in WWII, but the number of black combat units was far outweighed by the nuber of black support units (truck drivers, cooks, munitions supply, garbage detail, every position except combat for the most part). Yes, they performed admirably in the face of bigotry and segregation but any black soldier in Iwo Jima were relegated to the rear for support and resupply of munitions. Apparently Spike Lee see only the lack of black roles in movies instead of actually being historically accurate.

There were a few African American in "Flags of Our Fathers." They were represented on the ship when instructions were given to the soldiers. In fact, they're all standing together in that short clip because the Marines were still segregated at that point. It wasn't until 1948 that Truman desegregated all the armed forces. It's not that African Americans didn't make a difference on Iwo Jima, but they were totally underrepresented in the Marines, so it wouldn't have made any sense to have a large number of African Americans in the movie. Spike Lee is totally ridiculous. He needs to read up on his history.

There may have been thousands of black soldiers in WWII, but the number of black combat units was far outweighed by the nuber of black support units (truck drivers, cooks, munitions supply, garbage detail, every position except combat for the most part). Yes, they performed admirably in the face of bigotry and segregation but any black soldier in Iwo Jima were relegated to the rear for support and resupply of munitions. There were a few African American in "Flags of Our Fathers." They were represented on the ship when instructions were given to the soldiers. In fact, they're all standing together in that short clip because the Marines were still segregated at that point. It wasn't until 1948 that Truman desegregated all the armed forces. It's not that African Americans didn't make a difference on Iwo Jima, but they were totally underrepresented in the Marines, so it wouldn't have made any sense to have a large number of African Americans in the movie. Spike Lee is totally ridiculous. He needs to read up on his history.

I kinda doubt there were many brothas lining up to join the Japanese army in WW2. And Fathers was about the sham that the famous photo was built around. No blacks involved.
