It doesn't matter how long she campaigned. The CA Suppreme Court went against the wishes of the residents of California and made gay marriage legal. When the people had a chance to reverse that decision, they did. The CA voters have spoken. That's how they feel. You can't change that. If Ellen wants to be married legally she can move somewhere it's legal. Isn't it legal in the UK?
A black president and Gay marriage, ellen, the US can only handle one major issue at a time. You're in line, just wait your turn. Go make a joke or something.
Obama never promised homosexuals anything special, so I don't know why all of them campaigned so hard for him. He socialized in racist and extremely religious circles Muslim and Christianity alike all his life. I'm sure he disagrees with the gay lifestyle more than McCain ever has.
"I do not agree with General Pace that homosexuality is immoral. Attempts to divide people like this have consumed too much of our politics over the past six years (USAToday.com)" Obama
Typical Gay/Lesbian movement tactic, latch on to the plight of the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King had nothing to do with you getting your "lick-her license"
Most voters don't agree with gay marriage. A lot of religious people are accepting of homosexual people even though their bibles tell them it's wrong, but I think it's asking too much of them right now to vote for them to be legally married. Maybe one day, but not now.
You know, Obama doesn't support gay marriage, but he did oppose Prop 8. It is a civil rights issue: equal rights is a civil rights issue. Just because the campaign for prop 8 hid behind a slippery slope freedom argument like, "Do you want adoption agencies to be forced to allow homosexuals to be allowed to adopt kids?" to which the equal rights answer should be, "Yes, if they're publicly funded." Behind that argument is bigotry, and the idea that gay couples shouldn't be treated the same as straight couples under the law.
People don't want to be forced to allow gay marriage or accept gay marriage. It's up to the voters to decide on it and most voters obviously don't want it. You're protected under many civil rights laws that put people in prison if they commit hate crimes against you and people can't legally discriminate against you for jobs, housing, etc. That is a big step forward. People feel that making gay marriage legal is a gateway to making more untraditional marriages legal. Many people still take marriage extremely seriously. Just be happy you're making progress and don't force yourselves so hard on people or you'll chase them away.
This is the sort of thing that should never have been put to a vote. Just because a majority of people vote against it, does NOT mean they have the right to so. I don't give a fuck if they think it's immoral or not. In the early 1700's if they have put slavery up to a vote it probably would have passed because the majority of America didn't have issue with it, but just because they majority would agree to that doesn't make it right. In the late 1800's if you gave men the option to vote on whether or not women could vote, the majority would have said no, but again that does not make it right. Marriage is between two consenting loving adults and should not be voted upon by anyone. If two men or two women get married and you object because of your sense morality, WHO FUCKING CARES. THOSE PEOPLES MARRIAGES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. WAKE UP AMERICA AND STOP TREATING GAY PEOPLE LIKE WE'RE INFERRIOR TO STRAIGHT PEOPLE. BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT INFERRIOR TO WHITE PEOPLE, AND WOMEN ARE NOT INFERIOR TO MEN.
Most gay MEN live a deviant lifestyle in the eyes of other people. Even George Michael admits most gay men who are in committed relationships still have open relationships so they can have sex with other men. Bathhouse sex, orgies, public restrooms, that's what people hear about.
Marriage is legally defined in the U.S. as man+woman. That's the way it is, so I'm sorry your feelings are hurt Justin. Most people don't agree with gay marriage, but most people voted for a half black man with Hussein as his middle name and a questionable photocopied birth certificate. Like somebody said up there, your time will come. You're not forced to live here in America, so you can move somewhere else if you don't like it here. You have the right to leave.
In the absence of a pro "gay marriage" law there are other vehicles to ensure your partner benefits in the event of your death or hospitalization. California has anti-discrimination laws, and as such one can expect a State Supreme Court showdown. So for all intents and purposes, it is not over yet.
According to exit polls, more than 70% of black voters in California voted against Prop 8. So ACORN did everything they could to register pro-Obama voters, only to have it bite them in the ass on Prop 8. Oh, the delicious irony!
No matter what the state Supreme Court Does in California most people who live there still don't want gay marriage. Black religious extremists are the most racist and homophobic people in the states, more than Evangelicals and born again Christians.
#6: Lesbians and Gays aren't looking for "anything special," they're looking for the same basic rights and freedoms as the rest of y'all are supposed to be promised in your Constitution (you know, that amazing, loosely-defined part about "Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness"?) There's nothing "special" about two men or two women marrying one another, its a basic, inalienable right they should be able to exercise. Except for Neaderthals like you and anonymous #11 & #18. Are you all part of some "Anonymous Klan" or something?
Weird how the liberals misinterpret freedom and rights. The people who disagree with gay marriage are free to feel that way and have the right to vote against it just like other people have the right to hate them for it and think they're dumb for feeling that way. Without conservatives this country would have failed a long time ago, without liberals we wouldn't have evolved in certain directions. We need both, but there NEEDS TO BE A SHUT OFF SWITCH. There is a such thing as too much and it takes time to see the results of things before you know if it was good or bad for the country and the people.
9/11 happened only 8 months after Bush became president, but people blamed him for it even though Bin Laden had done most of the planning for it and had Al Quaeda operating in the U.S. during the Clinton administration. Every smart person knew Bush Jr. was going to go after Saddam right away no matter what, even if 9/11 didn't happen, because his daddy failed doing it years before. California went to hell under Grey Davis' leadership. People voted for the wrong candidates to make it to the primary elections for both parties in 2004 and 2008 because the best candidates didn't have enough money to get your attention and most Americans are too LAZY and uneducated to do their research. Everyone needs to wake up and grow up and America needs to grow the balls back that liberals and greedy people have taken from them, or they are screwed.
#31 That's the way you're interpreting laws and the state of the union because that's how you want to feel because that's how you want to earn your living. It'll be profitable for you, as you know. If you really wanted to do something 'good' with your law degree and really cared about people you'd take less money and help victims of crimes such as rape, molestation, murders. Why don't convicted child molesters and child rapists get automatic life sentenses? Because your ACLU friends are too busy helping call those laws 'unconsitutional'. Stuff your law school rhetoric. I've heard it all before. All law school kids sound the same. It's all very exciting now while you're still in school, I know.
#21 That's why so many of the gay/lesbian population voted for Obama. He does not personally agree with gay marriage, but he also feels it's wrong to ban it. You should not manipulate the laws of a country to coincide with your personal view points. Going back to my original examples at one time in the United States interracial marriages were against the law. You may not personally agree with, for example, a black man and white woman getting married, but you have no right to ban it because of your own personal opinions, or your own sense of morality.
Where does that say anything about gay marriage? Lots of people are fine with gay people and civil unions, its the designation of marriage they have a problem with.
This is why I make fun of celebrities. She assumed because he doesn't hate gay people he'd be FOR gay marriage. So she and the other retard celebrities who voted for the guy thinking it was fashionable to vote for the black guy are now looking like bigger idiots than they already are.
#32 said: "The people who disagree with gay marriage are free to feel that way" that much is true. what you don't (or, perhaps more accurately (given California's Prop 8 "decision,") "shouldn't" have the right to do is to make your "feelings" into a discriminatory LAW.
and then you said: "Without conservatives this country would have failed a long time ago, without liberals we wouldn't have evolved in certain directions" But without progressives your nation would be a collection of British Colonies, enslaving Black people (overtly), and subjugating your women (ditto). then you said: "We need both, but there NEEDS TO BE A SHUT OFF SWITCH." Which sounds very much like you're trying to be "fair and balanced" but what you really want is for things to remain in a state where you feel comfortable because you're on the "winning" side of the gender/race/economic/sexual preference divide. What's the best way to get into a pool? Wade in slowly and "get used to it" every couple of minutes; or just dive right in and get the first cold blast over with so you can enjoy your swim?
There are no good reasons to ban gay marriage. Using religion is wrong because you should not shove what you believe on to someone else (they are not trying to make you get a gay marriage so they are not shoving what they believe on to you) and we also have a seperation between church and state so using the bible and Christianity to oppose gay marriage should mean nothing to lawmakers anyway. It is a civil rights issue and it is disheartening that so many people think that the right to marry who you wish is a privilage, not a right.
Do not argue that gay marriage cheapens marriage because the divorce rate and people that have multiple marriages or quickie 55 hour ones cheapen it. Straight people have done enough damage on their own to the its validity.
13:06:26 -- Listen, I am not going to attempt to convince you of anything since you are obviously a hysterical ditto-head.
Your assumptions about my career are quite revealing about your level of intellect. To categorically brand every freedom loving attorney as a protector of rapists, molestors and murderers only highlights your nescient state of being. Anyone who educates themselves by listening to AM radio is already at a disadvantage, so please, don't even try to lecture me about the naivete of law students -- students who have the stomach for one of the toughest challenges they will ever face. Many of the 20-year olds with whom I attend school can run circles around you intellectually. Even my ultra-conservative peers aren't delusional like you. Thank goodness I had the foresight to head in this direction several years back -- your ignorance deepens my resolve even further to rid the legal system of ignorant demagogues like yourself.
bud #37 Jumping into cold water and protecting a country like the United States are two completely different things that cannot be compared. Look what Bush did when he invaded Iraq. He jumped into cold water and screwed us because he underestimated our enemy. Religious extremists in the Middle East do not play by our war rules. If Bush meant business he would have dropped some nukes months after it started. Instead most of the rest of the world hates us and we're on the way to another Great Depression. I PROMISE you most conservatives and Republicans dislike GW Bush more than the liberals and Dems do.
#38 - If I'm asked my opinion on something I can use whatever I want to justify it.
And getting married IS a privledge, not a right. There is no Amendment for ANYONE in the US Constitution saying they have a right to marry anyone, let alone whoever they want.
Stop it. None of you will get anything solved here. The voters voted, gays didn't get what they wanted, California should secede from the Union anyway since most of them hate America. Let them be Canada or be Mexico.
#39 - the Bush administration did exactly what was best for the Military-Industrial complex: he gave them a war to profit by. Read "The Shock Doctrine," by Naomi Klein. Find out what nefarious shit business people have been perpetrating around the world for the last 40-odd years...
I dont get why alot of the couples who are gay one takes on the manly role (Ellen) and the other a feminine role (Portia). I don't get that and see it so many times where women who are gay and look manly are with girls who look feminine. Another example is Melissa Ethridge, her wife look feminine. Why is that?
#42: so, you'd have no problem with someone voting on a "proposition" of state constitutional amendment that made your sexual preference outlaw? Coz if it passed, well, that was "the will of the people," right? And you'd have to accept it. Grow up.
#39 Classic ad hominem response again which not only shows how extreme liberal you are, but how young you are. Most kids your age whether they are studying law or not think they know it all, think they're above it all, think they're smarter and wiser than everyone. Either you'll be chained to a desk at some law firm IF you pass the bar or your family's money will buy you a ticket into a better associate job at a law firm where you'll get to actually see a court room sometimes. Either you work hard enough and kiss enough ass to be a named partner or your family's money will by you a spot in the firm's name, but no matter what happens you'll hopefully grow up and shut up long enough to listen one day. You can't win cases without the ability to listen to and understand the other side's case and properly argue against it. Good luck!
bud, you also have the right to realize most of the people who voted in the state of California do not want legalize gay marriage. Maybe some of the people you see every day who don't say that to your face and are afraid of talking to you about it because they know most of you can't discuss it without getting hostile. You can't convince people to side with you by acting that way, and hanging Sarah Palin by a noose in front of your house. Juss sayin
#45: lotsa studies about the "roles" partners play in couples... in all couples (straight, gay, or lesbian), one partner will typically be "masculine"/"wearer of the pants" and the other will take the "feminine"/supportive/nurturing role. It's a stable (or stabilizing and cooperative) balance between the partners, and it needn't be that one is always one role or the other (I'm a better cook than my wife, she's better with the $$, AND she makes more of it than I do) Sometimes manner of dress expresses the role of the partner, sometimes not.
bud, you also have the right to realize most of the people who voted in the state of California do not want to legalize gay marriage. Maybe some of the people you see every day who don't say that to your face and are afraid of talking to you about it because they know most of you can't discuss it without getting hostile. You can't convince people to side with you by acting that way, and hanging Sarah Palin by a noose in front of your house. Juss sayin
No one's "outlawing" sexual orientation. What's being outlawed is a sick, twisted attempt to change the very definition of a crucial institution which serves an important societal interest.
It's not about "equal rights." This is not the 60s where blacks could not vote like everyone else, they just wanted to vote like everyone else. They did NOT ask for special voting privileges.
Why should we redefine a 1000 year old tradition of marriage for those people? they are the deviants, not us.
@ bud, for the sake of argument. Speaking on the side of science, humans are mammals - animals - the penis and vagina are meant to be together to make babies and preserve the human race. For example, if a human woman is born with the genes and hormones to make her more masculine than feminine, be attracted to other females, not males, and act as a male, but still be genetically female, that means she is genetically flawed, retarded. She's still human, she's not a bad person because of it, but she's still screwed up, yes, no?
that's why I appealed to their own self-interest in my #46 post... Why support a discriminatory law because it flatters your morals, when some other group would be happy to pass a similarly discriminatory law that takes away something you cherish?
"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up." -Pastor Martin Niemöller
14:00:09 -- All your assumptions are completely wrong, furthering my assertion that you are, indeed, delusional and hysterical. Let me point out why:
* I grew up in an ultra-conservative Catholic family, much of whose values I hold dear today. * I am a returning law student after years of being an chemical engineer -- therefore, I am not young. * I am completely independent, having worked my way through my undergrad and now my JD without any assistance whatsoever other than my savings. * My career aspirations have nothing to do with trial work. * I've argued in many mock trials quite successfully; in fact, a few to the praise of my *conservative* peers.
So not only are you wrong on all counts, but you have no clue what kind of work awaits a J.D. Your stereotypes about attorneys are soooooooo Hollywood.
I've realized that arguing with you is the intellectual equivalent of debating politics with a Britney Spears fan. I'm done with you. Here, for the last time, is your little pink ass.
#52: back in the cage! "1000 year old tradition"? Christ, even the Bible claims to cover 6000 years of history, and there were people getting married in the early books of the Bible! And how crucial is an "institution" that EPICALLY FAILS at least 50% of the time in North America. If marriage were a university, and 50% of the people who got degrees from that university couldn't succeed in their area of specialty, you'd take away their degree-granting charter! Not call for legal protection of it!
bud, you are not about to be sent to a concentration camp and put to death in a gas chamber for being gay. Not in the United States. Not yet. If the laws become too liberal, then you might, because pretty soon, if you push it too far then the racists and homophobes will start standing up for what they believe in. Be careful what you wish for. This is why people can't take you seriously. Your arguments defending gay marriage are irrational.
The Prop 8 decision actually recinded something that was legal in that state prior to Tuesday's vote. You should consider that prior to casting judgement.
#56: My arguments defending the rights of gays and lesbians to partake in the rights and responsibilities of marriage (and not some "separate but equal" civil union) are quite rational, really.
What's irrational is defending injustice because the just cause makes some people uncomfortable.
No. 32. Al Quaeda was funded by the United States in the early 80s by a Democratic congress (with a budget approved by a Republican president) in order to stop the Russia from invading Afghanistan. This act essentially ended the cold war but put certain Afghan sects into power. The same Afghan sects that helped fly our own airplanes into the Twin Towers. It's all detailed in the book Charlie Wilson's War. Congressman Wilson was one of the leaders of the movement to fund the Afghans b/c of his hate of Russia and communists. So while 9/11 may (or may not) have been planned during Clinton's administration, it was funded during Reagan's.
1. Who paid for you to go to college to become a chemical engineer and be able to have those savings which the average person would have to spend on student loans? Academic scholarship? Minority scholarship? Wealthy family?
2. Nobody likes a judge who didn't spend years doing grunt work as an attorney. They're without question unqualified in every way.
3. Mock trials? Laughing out loud. Good luck with the real world.
And Justin (and other homosexuals), I'm a white, Christian who believes this is SO wrong. This is no different than the Jim Crow laws of the late 1800s through mid-1960s in my eyes. I hope one day, after you are afforded your rights as an American citizen, Americans look back and are truly and genuinely sad about the days we (as a collective whole) voted to deny you these rights. Our country may have been founded with an intentionally vague Constitution that allowed for interpretation, but our country was also founded on the basis of the separation of church and state. That's something our (Republican) congressmen so easily and readily forget.
#55 I actually come from a family with several generations of people with J.D.s, and have many friends who practice law. Some of them own practices, some of them are associates some are law clerks, and some are judges. Nice detective work, genius. I did manage to anger you into giving up who you are, even if you weren't completely truthful.
"What's being outlawed is a sick, twisted attempt to change the very definition of a crucial institution which serves an important societal interest."
A "crucial institution" that is taken for granted and exploited by heterosexuals!! how is it any worse for two men or women to marry once than it is for a heterosexual couple to marry and divorce 7 times? or drunkenly marry in vegas? or marry someone only for money? where is the sanctity in that?
if we are going to be "holier than thou" in regards to same-sex marriage, why isn't that sanctimonious rhetoric and damning judgement carried over to adultery (which breaks one of God's cardinal commandments) or out of wedlock marriage? Those are sins, outlawed in the Bible? why is it OK for felons, rapists, child abusers/molesters, killers to marry but not OK for gays to marry? Your excuses are as flawed as you're claiming the other side's opinions are.
Storm 14:24:49 your post required no thought at all. You clarified what we're fighting for...equal rights! Black people fought for their freedom, the right to vote, the right to marry who they wished...they fought to be treated like everyone else EQUALLY. We are not asking for special treatment with marriage, we are asking for EQUAL treatment.
How can people think blacks should have equality and not homosexuals? It's baffling. I hope and believe that one day, we'll have a gay president and his/her spouse living in the White House.
Justin, bud, and the law student all sound like the same people. I'm trying to figure out who's who since they're obviously trying to overwhelm the thread and going for the special olympic win.
ROFL @ 69's comment! hahahah I can't wait to read what people comment on that one. Yeah and we can all hug each other and decorate each other's houses instead of fight, and terrorists won't be angry at us anymore because we're so nice and fighting is so bad and ruins your complexion. Let's dress the the military in pink. The colors now are so drab!
Are you serious #71? By that same token, Obama's White House would be full of bbq ribs, bootie-shaking parties, gangs and all sort of other black stereotypes.
Banning gays from marrying who they want goes against the very reason people came to the US. To escape religious persecution. And there was also that whole issue with England having just the one church.
Separation of church and state apparently isn't a priority anymore. Because directly or indirectly, the banning of gay marriage is based on religious beliefs.
Its a shame that we still discriminate against people for being different.
No #71. He's half Muslim and half self hating white. He'll do what the Qur'an told him to do. Blend in with the non-believers and pretend to be them until you outweigh the majority. Look at what happened to countries like Sweden. America got what they voted for, it's their own fault. Is Obama going to do anything to protect you from terrorists who are illegally crossing your borders anytime soon?
Still waiting for the hetersexual parade where everyone is up in your face. Oh wait, that's the gay parades where evryone is wearing next to nothing and up in your face. We must have our special parades. We get special rights.
Oh hell people, how about allowing prostitution first. It's your body. Why does the government get to tell you you can't sell your own body??
I would also like to see the right for transvestites to marry, dogs can marry people, cats too! Where do we stop people?
#53, if that's what you're likely to be called, nobody has responded to your post because it's nonsense
You're not taking into account that homosexual activity and couples are found throughout the animal kingdom as well. Furthermore, scientists have now proven the some people are genetically predisposed to be gay, it's hardwired into the brain.
People with red hair have that hair color because of a genetic trait. They have two copies of a genetically recessive trait on a chromosome, which results in red hair, freckles, and either green or blue eyes. Using your example those people would be labeled as retarded as well.
That's why nobody has responded to your post because frankly, it's STUPID.
True Obama does not believe in gay marriage. But he DOES believe it should be a state determined amendment, which the GOP candidate did not support. It was unfortunate that this prop passed. It's sad that people are so afraid of change... we have to remember it wasn't too long ago when women and african americans had limited rights as well. We've come so far but still have so far to go.
Homosexual activity is found throughout the animal kingdom, but is that activity a genetic mutation? Is it a genetic flaw? I'm not saying homosexuality is morally wrong. In many cases homosexuality looks like a result of trauma in people's lives. That can't be denied. Do you know any *famous* homosexuals who did not have terrible things happen to them when they were children? Most of them had abusive parents, or were raped, or molested, or had parents die when they were young. Yes, no?
It's 1 man and 1 woman who can marry each other here. Sorry you don't like it, but that's how it is. We also don't let one man marry many women, one person marry their dog, one man marry his daughter, one person marry a young child. Just be happy we're still trying to be a civilized society compared to a lot of rest of the world.
I haven't seen any church preach hate in my entire life of being forced into different churches by my family. Every church preached the same things from the bible and preached love and forgiveness and doing for others what you would want done to yourself.
Barack Obama spent 20 years participating in and financially supporting a church that preached hate, revenge, intolerance, racism, and anger, and you elected that man as your president.
Obama was against Prop 8. It's true that he has said he is for civil unions instead of gay marriage (which is sad but necessary for a presidential candidate to say if he wants to get elected in this bigoted nation of ours). I agree with Ellen 100% that electing Obama was a great step forward whereas writing discrimination into the CA constitution is absolutely backwards.
The people of California (and any other state in the union) have EVERY right to vote on this issue. While it may seem wrong to put this up for a vote because most voters will vote based on their religious convictions, the RIGHT to vote on legalizing gay marriage stems from the fact that it involves tax dollars. California, just like any other state, has social programs in place that can benefit spouses. Those programs are funded by Californian tax dollars. The people have every right to decide how their tax dollars are spent. By placing gay marriages on the same level as heterosexual marriages, they would be giving permission to the state to use their tax dollars to support gay marriage.
I personally have no problem with state-recognized gay marriages. If two people are going to love each other and respect the institution of marriage, then more power to them. But if the majority of voters don't want to spend their tax dollars to support it, then I have to respect their decision. Democracy doesn't always leave people with a happy warm fuzzy. You can't always get your way just because you feel you're right. Obviously, the MAJORITY of voting Californians did not agree.
Now, my main question with this Prop 8 is this: what happens to the Californians who got married while it was temporarily legal? Are their marriages still going to be recognized, or will they be annulled automatically?
79: Being afraid of change is a natural defense. A vote for legalizing gay marriage is a gamble. "If I vote for it then what will lawyers use this for later, plural marriage maybe?" "If I vote against it will I be a homophobe or a bigot?" Leave voters alone. They don't want it. They have spoken.
The harder you force yourself on people the more they will resist. If Obama kept saying "So what if my dad was Muslim, so what if my mom was as self hating white, so what if I was born in Kenya, you racist, intolerant religious bigots should feel bad for the 400 years of racist oppression and slavery in this country. YOU OWE ME!"
Would you have voted for him if he said what he was really thinking?
#92, from my perspective I'll tell you what is so funny: all the false moral equivalencies and slippery slope fallacies being put forth by the anti-gay marriage folks. I've seen high school kids with better debate skills. No joke.
wow, yes on prop 2? makes me lose a bit if respect for her. and i love ellen. i hate all of you idiots who voted yes on 2!!! now our eggs are going to be 7.00 a carton. and right now, with our economy the way it is, farmers cannot afford to redo the farm. nice job putting a bunch of farms out of business.
Gotta love how you just inadvertantly pointed out Obama as a liar. So many people voted for him while knowing that many of the things he said (usually about religion and God and about America being the "greatest country in the world", etc) were lies. Perverse, isn't it?
Says something about his supporters and about the man himself.
You could say that all politicians lie. However, they usually don't lie about things like their fundamental beliefs about moral or social issues. Most politicians do eventually draw the line somewhere because otherwise they would not really be standing for anything. I guess some draw much further down the line than others.
1.A person can't marry an animal because an animal has no say in it. An animal can't speak for itself and consensually enter into a contract with a human being.
2. A person can't marry a family member because it's been outlawed for obvious reasons. We aren't infringing upon their rights, we're saying this causes severe genetic disorders and psychological problems.
3. A person can't marry more than one other person because it would cause problems in the household. Personally, I have no problem with it, but I can see why people wouldn't want someone to marry more than one person. Talk about complicating the legal process.
Anyway, I notice all of you arguing for the Yes on 8 side conveniently forget to argue about the fact that it is the same type of discrimination as blacks not being able to marry whites. It would seem then, that you people want to go back to the days when our constitution was first created (the California one, anyway), is that correct?
1. My dog and I have a special relationship you can't understand. We speak the same language. You don't understand his language like people don't understand sign language when they talk to deaf people. My dog consented to this marriage and we're deeply in love.
2. There are many cases where people have had incestuous relationships which have produced children which weren't retarded. The psychological problems come from society making them feel bad for who they are and where they came from.
3. Exactly, and then go back to your psychological problems you wrote about in 2..
#53, 72... I was sort of ignoring the question because I don't know how to answer such a strangely-constructed question. But I'll give it a shot: She is what she is: a slightly masculine-looking woman who is attracted to other women sexually and emotionally. I don't see how this makes her "retarded" in any way. Or a "mutant," or whatever other way you can think of to make her less-than-human. It makes her what and who she is. If anyone's "retarded" (and I hate that word in this context), it's the people who think there's something wrong with her because she doesn't look like a Maxim model (clue: most Maxim Models don't really look like Maxim models. It's called Photoshop.), and gets sexual satisfaction from sex with a woman.
anonymous #76 @ 15:39: you, too, are an ass. that lame-oid "why do they need a special parade (gays)/month (Black History Month)/etc." to celebrate their "difference"? tactic is such a bullshit gambit: if you don't understand that in North America, EVERY FUCKING DAY is "Up! With Straight White Attractive Folks Day," and that this gets rubbed in the noses of everyone who's not a Straight, White, Attractive, "Achiever" EVERY FUCKING DAY, then you really have no clue what is to be "different" in N.America today. Go visit some other country where your accent, your skin colour, your manner of dress and your whole "normal" way of behaving is considered laughable or criminal or just plain unacceptable (might I suggest Iraq or Afghanistan?). Then you'll know how millions of people feel EVERY DAY when they hear jackasses defending the likes of Sarah Palin, and voting down the right of lesbians and gays to marry in California. Maybe then you'll grow up.
Is she really so stupid to think that it's a step toward equality just because her chosen candidate won? That has nothing to do with it.
To Bud, Sarah Palin is fabulous. A working mom with a solid marriage, exec experience when the others have none, and she didn't abort her latest child because of an issue that would make others go with that option. She's totally cool.
As unfortunate as it is in some situations, our country has decided to make large decisions based on our votes. At times we are very excited about the votes because we believe that the votes will lead to the outcome that we want. Yet, when the votes come back to bite us on the ass, we get upset. There have been many other things that have been voted on that have been forbidden. While other things may seem small compared to this one, just remember that it did affect someone's life in one way or another by telling someone how they can or cannot live their lives. I don't personally believe that things such as these should be put to votes, but it happened and we will have to get over it.
I just wish that people could look at this marriage thing in a different light. Just try to imagine that being gay was the norm and that people were trying to put a ban on straight marriage(I know that it sounds strange but just for the sake of looking at things in a different point of view). Would you be okay with not having the ability to marry the person that you love because a majority thinks that it's wrong?
The vote for president did affect me. This man is a liar who lied about where he was born, where he went to school before he immigrated to the United States, avoided the fact that he spent decades in a militant racist church. The gay community donated a lot of money to elect this man and never knew what they were voting for. We in the Independent party warned you all for a LONG time that man is not going to help change anything for you.
We can solve all of our nation's energy problems by collecting all the energy from the exploding Christofascist heads on this thread. That's guaranteed to light up at least a few million houses for a month. Bwahahahahaha!!!
Serves the bitch right for being so cold to mccain on her show and licking obama and michelles ass when they came, when in truth obama is more against gay marriage than mccain, mccain thought each state should decide for there own state, obama is against gay marriage, course i am sure lots of gays did not check all the facts . hahahah Elln serves your ugly ass right, I am no longer a fan after the obama and michelle ass licking and cold rudeness to mccain.
Agree 100% with Bud. Palin has choices because she is a rich, white, attractive, american woman who conforms to the gender binarism norm. She succeeds by standing on the necks of other women, by going along with the inequality inherent in binarism, & smiling while she does it. She does not comprehend nor, even worse, care about how her actions affect other women who do not have the same opportunities or rights Palin does. And of course, the same people who put her on a pedestal during the campaign turned on her like vipers as soon as the election was lost. It was all HER fault, because she is not human, not equal and therefore not competent or intelligent. She was useful as a tool, and now she's getting a bit of a taste of what it is like for others. Not quite the same as a rape pregnancy enforced on a woman who can't get access to an abortion though.

You're part of what we're talking here. You'd rather have yourself and your family dead rather that have a gay/lesbian president. You know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about this person beyond their sexual orientation and you've already passed judgement. Don't you see a problem with that? Throughout history people have passed judgement on others based solely on the color their skin. Do you have a problem with that?
Has anyone here ever seen the movie "Defending Your Life?" It's a comedy from the early 90's about a man who dies and arrives in the afterlife and has his life judged based on the choices he made during life, to determine if he is worthy to move on, or if he has to go back and do it all back over again. For all those with intentional hate in their hearts, I sometimes imagine you getting to the afterlife and being SCOLDED and send back to try it again.
For the record, YES, Obama has indicated he believes marriage is between a man and a woman. BUT, he is AGAINST changing the constitution to deny people rights. It is just so unbelievable how so many of us can rationalize stripping rights away away from others, and very very sad. And @111 - wishing you're great grandchildren death instead of compassion towards someone that may have a different lifestyle than you? Wow. What an example in tolerance. We have come so far in the past 50 years, but we still have a LONG way to go.
Who gives a fuck? Seriously. If a man wants to marry a goat who then in turn marries a toaster, who cares? What's a real issue? How about the upcoming 10% unemployment we'll all be facing down in 2009.
HOWEVER there you go folks if Obama was white he wouldn't have won!
The talk show host said in a statement Wednesday to The Associated Press that she, "like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step toward equality" by electing Barack Obama as president.
I was a little surprised to see that people thought I'm gay. But then the "anti-gay" posters here haven't shown themselves to be particularly sophisticated thinkers...
To #123: Uhm, I'm straight, but never in my life have I "decided" to be attracted to a woman. It just happens. I see a naked picture of Cindy Crawford, I get a boner. At no point do I tell my penis to get erect, it just happens. So how is sexuality a choice? Does that mean you could choose to be gay if you wanted? If somebody put a gun to your head and said "get an erection and fuck a guy", you'd be able to do it? What about being attracted to fat people, or having a foot fetish, are those choices too? If people were able to choose who and what they're attracted to, there would never be affairs. People with fatter, older, or even ugly spouses would just "choose" to be attracted to that type of person.
Sexual orientation isn't a choice, it's a matter of chemical interactions in the brain that determine who/what you're attracted to. Gay people get shit on by most of society, if it really was a choice, why would anyone choose it?
you're only half right. Obama specifically opposed Prop. 8. he is against gay marriage, which is lame, but he spoke against repealing rights which had already been established.
oh yeah, and people shouldn't be allowed to vote on other people's civil rights directly. CA as well as all the other states that have them, are retarded. there is nothing in the Constitution which supports banning gay marriage, nothing. voters should no more be able to take away someone's right to vote than they should someone's right to get married.
I wonder if people in CA voted yes on Prop 8 because they were thinking that would legalize gay marriage. Because the party's name is definitely misleading! Oops!
all this obama is black, if obama wa white he would not have won, OBAMA IS NOT BKLACK AND HE IS NOT WHITE< HE IS BIRACIAL!!!!!!! he is not the first black precident either!!!!!! abe lincon had african genes! He is not even the first MIXED RACE PRES!! I am so sick of all the color labeling!!!
Marriage is nothing more than a legal institution. Why do gays want this so bad? Divorce is why most people avoid marriage. Its a headache. Live together suck and lick and do all your gay things and when it comes break up time just leave...With all your stuff...

Obama NEVER said he was against gay marriage! He said that it was up to the state courts to decide whether it is legal or not in their respective states. I'm not sure why the media misinterpreted that statement from him, McCain was also not against it either, but stated that state courts should decide whether it is an issue or not. Palin was the ONLY one who ever said she was against it, that's why McCain LOST (well one of the many reason why he lost that is...).

By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 11:45:50
We need to find a way to make lesbian (yum) marriage legal and gay male (yuk) marriage legal.
Come on, you that's the truth.
By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 11:52:02
People don't want to be forced to allow gay marriage or accept gay marriage. It's up to the voters to decide on it and most voters obviously don't want it. You're protected under many civil rights laws that put people in prison if they commit hate crimes against you and people can't legally discriminate against you for jobs, housing, etc. That is a big step forward. People feel that making gay marriage legal is a gateway to making more untraditional marriages legal. Many people still take marriage extremely seriously. Just be happy you're making progress and don't force yourselves so hard on people or you'll chase them away.
By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 11:55:23
By Justin, on November 6, 2008 12:03:00
By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 12:11:51
In the absence of a pro "gay marriage" law there are other vehicles to ensure your partner benefits in the event of your death or hospitalization. California has anti-discrimination laws, and as such one can expect a State Supreme Court showdown. So for all intents and purposes, it is not over yet.
By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 12:15:03
According to exit polls, more than 70% of black voters in California voted against Prop 8. So ACORN did everything they could to register pro-Obama voters, only to have it bite them in the ass on Prop 8. Oh, the delicious irony!
By Dave, on November 6, 2008 12:15:08
Actually, Obama said that he's against gay marriage, but that Prop 8 is wrong. He said those things in the same interview.
By Jenna, on November 6, 2008 12:20:16

By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 12:58:54
By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 13:06:26

#32 said: "The people who disagree with gay marriage are free to feel that way"
that much is true. what you don't (or, perhaps more accurately (given California's Prop 8 "decision,") "shouldn't" have the right to do is to make your "feelings" into a discriminatory LAW.
and then you said: "Without conservatives this country would have failed a long time ago, without liberals we wouldn't have evolved in certain directions"
But without progressives your nation would be a collection of British Colonies, enslaving Black people (overtly), and subjugating your women (ditto).
then you said: "We need both, but there NEEDS TO BE A SHUT OFF SWITCH."
Which sounds very much like you're trying to be "fair and balanced" but what you really want is for things to remain in a state where you feel comfortable because you're on the "winning" side of the gender/race/economic/sexual preference divide.
What's the best way to get into a pool? Wade in slowly and "get used to it" every couple of minutes; or just dive right in and get the first cold blast over with so you can enjoy your swim?
By bud, on November 6, 2008 13:22:51

By Kate, on November 6, 2008 13:39:13
Stop it. None of you will get anything solved here. The voters voted, gays didn't get what they wanted, California should secede from the Union anyway since most of them hate America. Let them be Canada or be Mexico.

By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 13:51:52
#42: so, you'd have no problem with someone voting on a "proposition" of state constitutional amendment that made your sexual preference outlaw? Coz if it passed, well, that was "the will of the people," right? And you'd have to accept it.
Grow up.
By bud, on November 6, 2008 13:53:01

Juss sayin
By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 14:16:01
#45: lotsa studies about the "roles" partners play in couples...
in all couples (straight, gay, or lesbian), one partner will typically be "masculine"/"wearer of the pants" and the other will take the "feminine"/supportive/nurturing role.
It's a stable (or stabilizing and cooperative) balance between the partners, and it needn't be that one is always one role or the other (I'm a better cook than my wife, she's better with the $$, AND she makes more of it than I do)
Sometimes manner of dress expresses the role of the partner, sometimes not.

By Storm, on November 6, 2008 14:24:49
@ bud, for the sake of argument. Speaking on the side of science, humans are mammals - animals - the penis and vagina are meant to be together to make babies and preserve the human race. For example, if a human woman is born with the genes and hormones to make her more masculine than feminine, be attracted to other females, not males, and act as a male, but still be genetically female, that means she is genetically flawed, retarded. She's still human, she's not a bad person because of it, but she's still screwed up, yes, no?

Think!
By bud, on November 6, 2008 14:33:45
bud, you are not about to be sent to a concentration camp and put to death in a gas chamber for being gay.

Homosexuals have the same rights as everyone else. They can marry a member of the opposite sex. If they choose not to, that's up to them.
By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 14:38:49

By justin, on November 6, 2008 15:01:40
How can people think blacks should have equality and not homosexuals? It's baffling. I hope and believe that one day, we'll have a gay president and his/her spouse living in the White House.

By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 15:21:59
Banning gays from marrying who they want goes against the very reason people came to the US. To escape religious persecution. And there was also that whole issue with England having just the one church.
Separation of church and state apparently isn't a priority anymore. Because directly or indirectly, the banning of gay marriage is based on religious beliefs.
Its a shame that we still discriminate against people for being different.
And for the record, I am not gay.
By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 15:24:30

Yes, no?

Just be happy we're still trying to be a civilized society compared to a lot of rest of the world.

I haven't seen any church preach hate in my entire life of being forced into different churches by my family. Every church preached the same things from the bible and preached love and forgiveness and doing for others what you would want done to yourself.
Barack Obama spent 20 years participating in and financially supporting a church that preached hate, revenge, intolerance, racism, and anger, and you elected that man as your president.
By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 16:30:38
Obama was against Prop 8. It's true that he has said he is for civil unions instead of gay marriage (which is sad but necessary for a presidential candidate to say if he wants to get elected in this bigoted nation of ours). I agree with Ellen 100% that electing Obama was a great step forward whereas writing discrimination into the CA constitution is absolutely backwards.

@#17 (Justin) -
Justin -
The people of California (and any other state in the union) have EVERY right to vote on this issue.
By Matteo, on November 6, 2008 16:47:01
You should check your facts. Obama was a strong supporter here in CA to vote no on Prop 8

By anonymous, on November 6, 2008 17:17:40
Slippery slope logic is always flawed. Period.
By NotBlonde, on November 6, 2008 17:56:09
@ NotBlonde

I was sort of ignoring the question because I don't know how to answer such a strangely-constructed question. But I'll give it a shot:
She is what she is: a slightly masculine-looking woman who is attracted to other women sexually and emotionally.
It's called Photoshop.), and gets sexual satisfaction from sex with a woman.

anonymous #71 @ 15:09: you, sir, are an ass.
anonymous #76 @ 15:39: you, too, are an ass. that lame-oid "why do they need a special parade (gays)/month (Black History Month)/etc." to celebrate their "difference"? tactic is such a bullshit gambit: if you don't understand that in North America, EVERY FUCKING DAY is "Up!

By Emily, on November 6, 2008 20:39:32
The vote for president did affect me. This man is a liar who lied about where he was born, where he went to school before he immigrated to the United States, avoided the fact that he spent decades in a militant racist church. The gay community donated a lot of money to elect this man and never knew what they were voting for.

Life is too short for hate...

It is just so unbelievable how so many of us can rationalize stripping rights away away from others, and very very sad. Uhm, being born black and enjoying large sweaty cock up your ass (as a guy) on a nightly basis are not quite the same thing.
People trying to equivocate race with sexual orientation are just trying to confuse and obfuscate the real issue.
Sexual orientation: a choice.
Race: not a choice.
Give me a break.
By anonymous, on November 7, 2008 13:26:17
To #123:
Uhm, I'm straight, but never in my life have I "decided" to be attracted to a woman.
By Joe, on November 7, 2008 17:30:45

I'm not sure why the media misinterpreted that statement from him, McCain was also not against it either, but stated that state courts should decide whether it is an issue or not. Palin was the ONLY one who ever said she was against it, that's why McCain LOST (well one of the many reason why he lost that is...).
