After reading all of this I'm completely confused. I met a guy in Atlanta who proudly told me his father was the first coloured attorney in his firm. #50- you'll notice in #15's comment the n word wasn't used to call someone by that name, it was making a historical reference. maybe not the classiest word, but it wasn't used in a negative manner. just a fact that it has been used in american history.

I agree, with #50 & #51. I read it as a historical reference, but none the less; no disrespect, but saying the "N" word is more appropriate than just spelling it out. We all know what it means. I'm taking a minorities class as we speak and to refer to a historical reference, you don't spell out that word because it's seen as derogatory, regardless of who you are. Using it appropriately is just saying the "N" word, though it shouldn't have been referenced at all. After reading all of this I'm completely confused. I met a guy in Atlanta who proudly told me his father was the first coloured attorney in his firm. He actually said coloured, and I'm pretty sure he didn't mean it in a derogatory way. Coloured wouldn't be my personal choice in descriptive words, but whatever.
So what should I say when I tell this guy's story, then?

She told me that in India, people refer to themselves as colored, spelled with a "k."
