Please lay off the politics. I have other blogs I read when I want political commentary. I read IDLYITW for the cheesecake. That's what you're really good at.
I'm not gay but I can understand why Melissa Etheridge is upset by this. Marriage, in the constitution, does not say it is between a man and a woman. It is, however, a union between two consenting adults. I'm angry that this passed too...hopefully there will be a day when the majority of citizens realize gay people are entitled to marry their partners.
It saddens me that this passed. There is already a lot of homophobia in this country--I see it all the time at the school where I work, in the community I grew up in, and in the community I live in. I think this ban is step in the wrong direction. Very sad.
Being gay is a lifestyle choice. it doesnt make you less of a person. But by the same token it doesnt mean you all have to shove that shit in our faces. by your logic we have to accept you and your ways no matter what. then i guess we also have to accept muslim extreemist the kkk nazi's comi's baby killers rapist and psychos as well. life style choices are just that. so keep that shit to yourself and stop bitching about it and move on. marriage between a man and woman is what is talked about in the bible. man a woman are what marriage was all about. you people want to be married for all the wrong reasons. re think why you want to be called " married " and then try that shit again. fucking liberal assholes are all to comfortable in this country. wake up and live. stop harping on what you cant fucking do and start to simply love the person your with. with or without being married. ASSHOLES
Bay Area Conservative...it's not a choice. Why should they have to make do without being married? Should women have made do without voting? The bible (fiction) does not make the laws of this land...have you ever taken a government course? You're okay with "christians" making the laws to live by, but you rail about muslims who want to take over the country...so you only hate a theocracy that you don't agree with? I hope one day you meet a gay person in real life that you like...then tell them to their face how you feel.
#5... wow... so gays are like muslim extremists and kkk? i thought they were good people mostly just like the rest of us. It's also not a lifestyle choice, it's who they are. Lord knows I could never make a lifestyle choice to touch a penis.
People pay their taxes to gain the benefit of the services (roads, national security, to name just two) they provide. If Melissa Etheridge and her wife are required to pay taxes, then they deserve the benefits of those services. Straight people who marry are entitled to tax breaks because of their common household. They get even more tax breaks if they have children. Since it's impossible for lesbians and gays to marry in many of the United States, they end up paying proportionally MORE taxes to get the same social services. This is economic injustice. Yet another in a long line of injustices heaped on lesbians and gays because of who they love and find attractive.
"It is never too late to give up your prejudices."
Marriage is a 3,000 year old religous tradition between a man and woman, why should it be changed to suit a small minority? This is just more narcissism on the part of gays. What happens when the polygamists and Nambla people demand the same thing? They can use the same "unconstitutional" nonsense if the gays get away with it. It's not a good precedent. Look at the big picture Melissa and stop being so dramatic.
I thought Melissa Etheridge was a man, so what's the problem? Seriously though, it's fucking retarded that so many people are outspoken against gay marriage. In 20 years or so, the contemporary population will look back on all of the current dissenters of GM with the same condemnation and embarrassment that we feel when we look back to the population before us that advocated segregation and denounced civil rights legislation. Fucking pathetic. I hate being a fiscal conservative who is rational on social issues, such as stem cell research and gay marriage yet has a healthy contempt for religion; it makes voting a real beotch!
hahaha, o stupid melissa you will be paying even more taxes now that your democratic (against gay marriage by the way) cadidiate obama won, spread the wealth, more taxes from the wealthy, hahahaha, get ready to pay up, I am sure all that money will be put to good use, polititians never abuse tax payer money
#24 should we follow all 3,000 year old traditions closely then? In that case all the women need to shut up and do what we say and we all need to take a trip to Canada and round up some slaves. Fucking dimwit.
Guess what, I BUSTED my ass helping out on the Obama/Biden campaign, because I believed in him. If she was so fucking worried about Prop 8, she should have used what was left of her "celebrity" to get out there and campaign against it. But she didn't so now she needs to STFU and deal with what her laziness cost her. Boo fucking hoo. I actually don't give two shits about gay marriage one way or another. But I do think it's bullshit that CA amends their constitution with only 51% of the vote.
I would like to remind the screaming masses that STRAIGHT people who live together also pay more taxes for the same services and that's discriminatory too. Why should a straight couple be punished for not wanting to get married? A straight person cannot share their unmarried lovers insurance or visit their hospital room either because they aren't "family". I know many people in this situation. Some don't want to marry and some can't marry due to financial reasons. Everyone in society will experience some sort of unfairness in their lifetime, it's part of life so gays need to stop whining like everyone's out to get them. Stop playing the victim card.
liberals love elections, but only when they go their way- for Ms. E's info, a majority of Obama voters voted against gay marriage, blacks 2-1. In fact, St. Baracky "JC Jr" Obama is on record against gay marriage. How does that square with his messiah complex and his fart-sniffing followers?
Of course, he wanted it both ways, he came out against Prop 8 while being against gay marriage at the same time.
new bumper sticker: Obama equivocated, Gays separated!
She talks big but the money she pays in goes for retirement, medical and running of our country as well as tending to the helpless, poor and infirm., so she is denying her fair share of payment to help her fellow countrymen and women. Sheese. ME ME ME!
Meh. Civil unions already give fairly similar tax status to being married. It's more complicated to do your state and federal tax returns, but that's more of a hassle than anything else. A federal employer might deny group insurance benefits to your partner, but that's not very common. Mostly the battle is won already. The marriage thing will happen in the next 20 years or so, sooner if the political maneuver of putting a gay marriage ban on the ballot no longer increases conservative voter turnout. Not unlike gay male sex, it's merely a means to an end.
Bud - stop referring to the cowardice of anonymous posters. You are no less anonymous than we are. Think about it, bro. "Bud" isn't exactly narrowing it down. In your next post you could easily call yourself "Bruce" or "Justin Timberlake" or "Nathan Lane" and nobody would know the difference. I guess what I'm saying is: stop being retarded.
Yeah. I didn't like the way the election went as well, so I guess I won't pay my taxes. Come to think of it, I don't like the air quality here in the Pacific Northwest, so I'm not going to pay my sales tax. AND, I don't like the way people talk to each other, so I'm not going to pay my cell phone bill.
What an arrogant, self centered twat Melissa Etheridge is. Typical Hollywood attitude; too good for the rest of us citizens. Fuck her...
okay, anon @ 11:34, I'll "stop being retarded," if you don't call me "bro," kay, dawg?
Now that we've nibbled away at the brittle edges of my posting, you can contemplate the body of the post.
to anonymous @ 11:46: apparently, 51% of Californians thought civil and social equality (and equity) were "too good" for Melissa Etheridge and her wife, so she's saying "fuck you" to y'all. Suck it up.
LOL. She might be saying "fuck you" but she'll also be saying hello to a jail cell, and a couple of atty's. Idle threats from a washed up singer. YAWN.
#27 marriage was invented by RELIGION not by any country, so yes, it should be left alone. If gays don't like religion they shouldn't be asking us to change something they don't belong to. Slavery was created by the GOVERNMENT and the MAJORITY was against it so your argument is invalid. Furthermore, BLACKS were the deciding factor in denying gay marriage. 70% of blacks are against gay marriage as opposed to only 30% of whites so it was in fact a minority that denied the minority. Can't blame "white christians" for this one.
5- what the hell is all this shit about marriage in the bible?? marriage was created FOR ECONOMICS! all this crap about it being about a man and woman and that's what god wants is absolute shit. by the "original definition" or "the way it's always been" marriage should only be about an agreement between two families of the same economic background, so i guess we should just go back to that, too. all you fundamentalists also need to recognize your religion is "a lifestyle choice" and stop shoving it down the throats of people that don't agree with you.
I don't understand what the big deal is. Why not just allow it? Nobody gets hurt. Many married couples are athiest, and they're allowed to marry. I don't understand why it suddenly becomes a religious thing where gays are concerned?
#29, Can't get married for financial reasons? You do know you can go down to city hall and get married right? You can get married in California for $45.
Anyway, this will pass in the next probably 10 years or so, so Melissa can relax. This vote passed with less percent than the last time (I think last time it was 56% or something) so eventually it'll go the right way and people won't be denied their rights.
#5 Why does your "lifestyle choice" of right-winged political views have to be tolerated? Maybe we should put it to a vote whether you have the same rights as us "liberal assholes". Since you are the minority (by a few percent) maybe we should vote on whether you have the right to free speech.
For all of you people who are eager to jail Etheridge over unpaid taxes: she is speaking rhetorically. She is not being literal. I am sure she is quite aware of what might happen if she ceases making tax payments. Jeez, people, get a brain!
"Be warned: it includes liberal whining, taking things to unnecessary extremes, ignorance of historical slogans, and completely blowing things out of proportion."
you've hit it right on the head #5 because being straight is also a lifestyle choice. If i wanted to marry the person I love, who happens to be the same sex its none of your business. The bible calls for us to love one another, and leave the judging up to God, not you. being gay is not a "lifestyle," a "hobby" or a choice. I didn't choose it. No one does. Did you choose to be straight? Second, stop forcing your religion on me. You don't speak for Reform Jews (or a majority of Conservative Jews), you don't speak for the Church of Christ, you don't speak for many Episcopalians, not to mention the Quakers, Unitarians -- millions of mainstream Americans of faith. You don't have to accept marriage between a same-sex couple. Your pastor doesn't have to officiate at Ellen and Portia's wedding. But you know what? You have no right to tell them they can't.
#24 your so right and I'm sure the millions of women and African Americans in this country should have just "gotten over it" when they weren't allowed to vote as well. Gay couples want to get married for the same reason straight couples do, because they're in love. Gay couples getting married does not take away anything from anyone else's marriage. The state doesn't have a limited supply of marriage licenses.
I agree with #40. Marriage is overrated. You can all have it, but trust me, I'd pay extra taxes every year if it meant I could stop pretending to enjoy time and sex with my boring-assed husband.
12:47:76, that is funny considering most gays in denial are black. Thinking they can occasionally fuck a guy in the ass and go back to a straight relationship and not be gay.
In nature, males are designed to produce as much offspring, and to mate with as many different fertile females as possible. Therefore, marriage is unnatural and always has been. This is the reason why so many people end up cheating while in a committed relationship.
"Be warned: it includes liberal whining, taking things to unnecessary extremes, ignorance of historical slogans, and completely blowing things out of proportion."
spoken like a white heterosexual male
Yeah, too bad Todd isn't white. Sorry to dispel your divisive stereotype.
Being gay is a sexual orientation, not a lifestyle choice. Collecting ceramic kittens is a lifestyle choice. The rights of a minority should never be put to a vote, otherwise women never would have gotten the vote, schools would never have been desegregated, & people of different skin colors would still not be allowed to marry. Homophobia is for douchebags & losers.
So true lawyers all over California were more disappointed than anyone. You know all they saw were $$$$$$ from all the extra divorce cases they could have if it didn't pass.
Silly and self-absorbed. If you don't like the laws of a jurisdiction -- move! If you decide to stay you have decided to take the good with the bad and that includes paying the taxes assigned. There are plenty of laws that most of us like but we cannot pick and choose what taxes to pay depending on where the government's funding goes. You lost. It is a democracy so try again next time. Until then, STFU.
And, to #36...she isn't saying UPS is gay. She is basically saying that waiters, hairdressers and UPS drivers by won't be paying taxes either because they make less than $150K, $250K, or whatever All Powerful Obama decides the limit should be.
Since everyone is whining about personal injustices, I'm going to cry because I feel discriminated when I'm taxed a hell of lot more than someone who is married or those who have popped babies from their vagina. I have not desire to do either. It's a lot easier to get by on 2 incomes, than 1 (sans kids, that is)...
Jean Chretien (a Roman Catholic), former Prime Minister of Canada, in 2003, when asked by his party to hold a referendum on gay marriage:
"To have a referendum to decide on the fate of the minority, it's a problem. It's why we have constitutions – to protect the rights of the minority. It's why we have the Charter of Rights. So if it is always the majority vote by referendum, who will defend the minorities?" (English isn't his first language, hence the odd phrasing.)
The point? Some things just shouldn't be put to a vote.
Btw, I just thought I would alert you all to a horrible racist crime that just happened that the media is purposely covering up because the perps are BLACKS. 2 marines, one black, one white, were viciously murdered by a group of black marines for racist reasons. They were pissed that a black was with a white. The media is ignoring this though... here is the link: http://wcbstv.com/local/marines.murder.rape.2.859311.html
The media did the same thing when the white tourists were racially attacked in the superdome during Katrina. If you wanted to hear that one you had to go to the BBC web site because no US media outlet would touch it. The media is purposely covering up hate crimes against whites. Let's talk about that injustice instead of this gay marriage bullshit. No one is dying because of the gay marriage ban.
Great message and one I hope all gay and lesbians hear and abide by. If you are gay/lesbian and live in the US of America DO NOT pay your taxes this year! :)
Why not? Because you are apparently not a true blood citizen who is accountable and able to have the same rights as all the other Americans of the US.
As a humanist and Canadian this all just baffles me.
70- So all the women should of just moved due to their lack of suffrage before the 1920's? Sorry, most people don't have the money to just decide to leisurely "move" to another location. In addition, grow a brain. She is not saying she isn't going to pay her taxes, genius, she is being rhetorical. Maybe you should try to "STFU" as you so eloquently state it.
Who gives a shit about this sheepdog in drag? What's she pissing over, can't afford health care for her partner?Been denied a job?A affordable place to live>This bitch can take her millions and shut the fuck up.
Sorry to shock all the super-religious folk out there, but marriage is NOT a "religious institution" as claimed by #24. It CAN be, but it was not "invented" by any religion nor does the ceremony need to be a religious one today. So let's please keep that in mind.
That said, I think she's being ridiculous when she says she's going to stop paying her taxes because she can't get married. Those two things just don't connect. I COULD understand if she said she only wanted to file the same amount of taxes that she would if she were allowed to be married, as #20 brought up. That actually does have some sense in it. Stopping paying taxes altogether? Not so much.
And to those who suggest she just give up and marry a man, you're ridiculous. If things were flipped, and opposite-sex relationships were the "shameful" ones, and someone suggested you just get over it and get with someone of the same sex, I'm guessing you'd have a few complaints.
Funny how wealth-hating Liberals put a $ in front of everything... I voted against Prop 8 myself and I think "the people" were wrong and they will find this out when the US Supreme Court hears this case (as it surely will). Nevertheless, Melissa is just being a rich white person whining about how much she has to pay in taxes (more than I make in five years, by the way). So what's new?
Ok, wait, so it's ok for liberal blog posters to talk about their whiny ass Liberal politics but because Todd obviously leans to the right he should shut up? How fucked is that? Liberals are supposed to be about "love, tolerance, acceptance" and all that Hallmark horse-shit but yet you gang up on (and relentlessly atempt to censor) anyone who disagrees with you. It's so fucking childish. By the way, I am a Libertarian.
Amen, #'s 40 and 59. After the honeymoon is over and reality sets in...marriage is just.....meh......what I wouldn't give for some strange dick every once in a while...
Why is this still an issue? If you don't want us shoving our "gayness" in your faces... because that's all we do, right, is parade our gay... then quit shoving your straightness into ours. We're not imposing our lifestyle onto yours, we're trying to HAVE a life, as you do. And no, we're not comparing our suffering to that of slaves; get real people. But equality is the same across the board. There aren't different levels or extremes of equality. And I've got news for you, without gay people, the entire history of civilization would have to be written. And that means, your damn right we shouldn't have to pay taxes so that you heteros can keep reproducing like it's the end of the world sucking up our dollars in the school system, healthcare, etc. etc. IT'S NOT RIGHT. If I can't exercise the right to use those public conveniences because I'm not allowed to adopt a child, or to get partnership benefits, there's no way I should have to pay for your right. And you know what, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, YOU LEAVE! Because this country wasn't founded on YOUR principles.
I think it's sad how reactionary and hateful most liberals are today. That's why I left the party. Now I just register as Libertarian and study everything before I vote on it.
Most of you Democrats in America went to your polling places to vote Obama and knew nothing about anything else on your ballot. That is dangerous and stupid.
In the 20 years Obama was in that racist church and listening to Reverend Wright I bet I heard a lot of hate speech about what an abomination those godless gays are.
Emanuel is said to have "mailed a rotten fish to a former coworker after the two parted ways."[7] On the night after the 1996 election, "Emanuel was so angry at the president's enemies that he stood up at a celebratory dinner with colleagues from the campaign, grabbed a steak knife and began rattling off a list of betrayers, shouting 'Dead! ... Dead! ... Dead!' and plunging the knife into the table after every name."[6] His "take-no-prisoners attitude" earned him the nickname "Rahm-bo".[7] People who worked with Emanuel at that time "insist the once hard-charging staffer has mellowed out."
his brother Ari is a talent agent in Los Angeles who inspired Jeremy Piven's character Ari Gold on the HBO series Entourage.[6] Emanuel himself is the inspiration for the character Josh Lyman on The West Wing[36]. Emanuel is a first cousin of Howard Stern Show writer Benjy Bronk
The people of California have spoken. So be it. Both McCain, AND Obama held the same position about gay marriage. They personally did not approve of it, but said it should be up to the people of each state to decide for themselves. What I find a bit ironic is, that in a voter profile breakdown, over 70% of black voters in Calif, voted to ban gay marriage. So much for 'minorities' supporting each other's rights.....I guess it only matters when it effects YOU.
I'm kind of annoyed at how she says she doesn't have the same rights as other citizens. She has EXACTLY the same rights as EVERY other citizen. All citizens, gay or straight, have the right to marry a person of the opposite sex. I'm straight, but I don't have more rights than she does, because I can't marry someone of my own sex, only someone of the opposite sex, right?
This reasoning is like saying I don't have the same rights as other citizens because, while other citizens can grill all the turkey burgers they want, I happen to vastly prefer human burgers. Where are my rights??????
"And you know what, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, YOU LEAVE! Because this country wasn't founded on YOUR principles."
I'm not personally against gay marriage, but the idiocy of this statement stuck with me. This country was NOT built on principles of sexual freedom. In fact, most of the forefathers would probably as soon stone a gay person as look at them.
#93 yes because if we all did the same things out forefathers did we would still own slaves, women couldn't vote and the civil rights movement would never have happened. laws needs to change with the times, if we all did word for word what the bible did we would be stoning people for adultery.
and she doesn't have the same rights as other citizens, she cannot marry the person she loves and that is the only reason gay couples want to get married, for the same reason as straight couples - for love. what does gay marriage take away from straight marriage? NOTHING. how at all is this affecting your life and your marriage - its NOT. the state doesn't have a limited supply of marriage licenses so it isn't taking ANYTHING away.
the point of all this is sir is that the voters should not have the right to put ANYONE'S marriage to a popular vote. Prop 8 is unconstitutional and illegal!
#93 - There is no law that states the right to marry means the right to marry someone of the opposite sex. The right to marry is considered a fundamental right PERIOD. Why the FUCK would a gay person marry someone of the opposite sex?? You are an idiot. The country was built on the principles of freedom and there are certain freedoms and fundamental rights that are explicit and implicit in the Constitution. You can't eat your human burgers because society does not condone murder and cannibalism, which is not the same as discussing the right to marry.
Why are the gays so misinformed about Obama, they think because he is a democrat he is cool with homosexuality, he is major homophobic, many republican politicians even though they are the concervative party have gay family members and are open and loving about the situation Obama not so much, Obama hates gays.
It seems like many liberals, especially younger voters, are confused about what our "fundamental" rights are. No, #95, nobody has the fundamental right to get married, and especially not when you rope in all of the govt. issues, taxes, etc that go along with it. Its like all of the liberal bankers who fucked up the economy acting like it was a fundamental right to own a home. Its not. Especially not a home that is waaay out of your price range.
The democratic party was suppose to be the party that promoted both blacks, and women, yet it was the Bush administration that employed the most of both minorities in government. Also Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter is gay and he said he supported her rights, and personal choice. Everyone thinks just because the democrats go on about these issues so much, they are the open minded ones. Look how they ripped Palin apart. She was still a woman who had accomplished a lot yet they treated her like she set women's rights back 100 years!
#102 when did dick cheney ever say he supposed his daughter being gay!? and Sarah Palin accomplished alot?? The only, and I repeat, the ONLY reason why Sarah Palin was picked to be McCain's VP was because Barrack did not pick Hillary as his and he wanted to grab up women voters. THATS IT! she didn't accomplish anything other than showing American she is a complete biggot, unintelligent moron.
Go Melissa. Support you in every way and if you don't feel right about paying your taxes I have to agree. If they do not appreciate your lifestyle/marriage fuck them!
Since when do those that enjoy the freedoms we have potentially available to us get to pick & chose which taxes they will pay? In almost any other country, Ethridge wouldn't be a star. Yet, here she is in America, taking advantage of the opportunities America offers her, and taking advantage of her ability to become what she wants, and she throws a hissy fit because something she wants is not available to her.
Guess what, honey? You can't have everything you want, all the time. I guess you'll just have to console yourself with your millions of dollars & your sexed up partner. I can't think of a more infantile, childish reaction; she's actually throwing a temper tantrum. What an immature baby; just suck it up & deal with disappointment, like the rest of us citizens...
Dammit. I love this website. Please don't be ignorant.
ALL PEOPLE DESERVE EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW.
That's not liberal whining. That is the best and brightest idea that human beings have ever had because it is the only way to attempt to create a just society when we all basically hate each other anyway.
If you missed the all the media hoopla about Dick Cheney's daughter Mary being "outed" in the press back several years ago, you represent the "newly" duped, and uninformed voter. Go read a history book. As for Palin's accomplishments, how many other women in U.S. government have been elected major, then have gone to to be elected Governor and have turned around the economy of an entire state. Even Ann Richards did not do that, but then you probably don't know who she is either.
"There is no law that states the right to marry means the right to marry someone of the opposite sex. The right to marry is considered a fundamental right PERIOD. Why the FUCK would a gay person marry someone of the opposite sex?? You are an idiot. You can't eat your human burgers because society does not condone murder and cannibalism, which is not the same as discussing the right to marry."
------------------------------------------ Once again, for the retards whining about how no one has read the Constitution, you should probably read it yourself.
"...Those opposed to gay marriage began to urge that an amendment to the Constitution be created to define marriage as being between a man and a woman only. Opponents of the amendment pointed to the failed Prohibition Amendment as a reason why such social issues should stay out of the Constitution. In the absence of any such amendment, however, marriage is not mentioned in the Constitution at any point." - http://www.usconstitution.net/constnot.html#marr
Thanks, but YOU'RE the idiot, and kindly shut the fuck up about the Constitution.
Cheney was at odds with both the Bush administration, and the some advocates in the GOP for his position on gay marriage. He has said on record that he is proud of his gay daughter( who also campaigned for him) and that "Freedom means freedom for everyone, and that people should be free to enter into any relationship they want to." He also stated the gay marriage rights were issues that should be decided by individual states. I guess that made him more "liberal" than Obama in this area!
Wow, what rock did everyone just crawl out from under? I come here to have fun, not read a bunch of wacko posts from bitter political nerds who have too much time on their hands.
Sorry, but I don't mind people having an intelligent discussion about current events now and then on these sites. Frankly, I'm glad that (some) people educate themselves about these things. God help us if we don't!
I remember reading somewhere that a man was able to marry a goat in some country this year. I want to say it was in The Netherlands but I don't want to piss off our Dutch friends if I'm wrong. Anyway, I agree with most posters that this isn't a Constitutional issue, but a State issue.
Melissa just needs to stop bitching and move to New Jersey.
to repeat: "To have a referendum [or a "Proposition" as California calls them] to decide on the fate of the minority, it's a problem. It's why we have constitutions – to protect the rights of the minority. It's why we have the Charter of Rights [the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is Canada's equivalent of your Constitution and Bill of Rights]. So if it is always the majority vote by referendum, who will defend the minorities?"
In other words: you can't use "majority rule" to wipe out the rights of the minority.
How Fucking hard is that to understand?
This cuts both ways, of course. If a majority were to vote to abolish the free practice of religion, it would be overturned by the Courts because it denies people their rights.
The point is that it NEITHER the Federal Gov't NOR the STATE'S business to be legislating who can marry whom. It's not about the size of your mob, it's about the protecting individuals and their rights from that mob, to have their citizenship mean the same as everyone else's.
Maybe their out to be some sort of test on basic Civics before people are allowed to vote? :)
@ bud --- don't speak for other canadians because you're making them look bad and don't compare your laws and constitutions to ours. canada is not perfect either, so get the fuck over yourself. if you weren't a leech on the u.s. you would have been taken over by someone else already. nobody wants your land because it's too cold and too french. be thankful you have the u.s. protecting you anyway. pussy.

By thebig28, on November 7, 2008 10:54:11
brave anonymous poster @ 10:32:
People pay their taxes to gain the benefit of the services (roads, national security, to name just two) they provide.
If Melissa Etheridge and her wife are required to pay taxes, then they deserve the benefits of those services.
Straight people who marry are entitled to tax breaks because of their common household. They get even more tax breaks if they have children.
Since it's impossible for lesbians and gays to marry in many of the United States, they end up paying proportionally MORE taxes to get the same social services. This is economic injustice. Yet another in a long line of injustices heaped on lesbians and gays because of who they love and find attractive.

By Get over it, on November 7, 2008 11:03:22
I thought Melissa Etheridge was a man, so what's the problem?
Seriously though, it's fucking retarded that so many people are outspoken against gay marriage. In 20 years or so, the contemporary population will look back on all of the current dissenters of GM with the same condemnation and embarrassment that we feel when we look back to the population before us that advocated segregation and denounced civil rights legislation. Fucking pathetic.
I hate being a fiscal conservative who is rational on social issues, such as stem cell research and gay marriage yet has a healthy contempt for religion; it makes voting a real beotch!
By Chris D, on November 7, 2008 11:03:54

By anonymous, on November 7, 2008 11:05:58

But she didn't so now she needs to STFU and deal with what her laziness cost her. Boo fucking hoo.
I actually don't give two shits about gay marriage one way or another. But I do think it's bullshit that CA amends their constitution with only 51% of the vote.
By Willa Dodge, on November 7, 2008 11:09:11
I would like to remind the screaming masses that STRAIGHT people who live together also pay more taxes for the same services and that's discriminatory too. Why should a straight couple be punished for not wanting to get married? A straight person cannot share their unmarried lovers insurance or visit their hospital room either because they aren't "family". I know many people in this situation. Some don't want to marry and some can't marry due to financial reasons. Everyone in society will experience some sort of unfairness in their lifetime, it's part of life so gays need to stop whining like everyone's out to get them. Stop playing the victim card.
By Life isn't fair, on November 7, 2008 11:09:32
liberals love elections, but only when they go their way- for Ms.

By anonymous, on November 7, 2008 11:20:27

Can't blame "white christians" for this one.

what the hell is all this shit about marriage in the bible??
marriage was created FOR ECONOMICS! all this crap about it being about a man and woman and that's what god wants is absolute shit. by the "original definition" or "the way it's always been" marriage should only be about an agreement between two families of the same economic background, so i guess we should just go back to that, too.

By anonymous, on November 7, 2008 13:33:50
#29, Can't get married for financial reasons? You do know you can go down to city hall and get married right? You can get married in California for $45.
Anyway, this will pass in the next probably 10 years or so, so Melissa can relax. This vote passed with less percent than the last time (I think last time it was 56% or something) so eventually it'll go the right way and people won't be denied their rights.

Also, this will be in the courts for YEARS and will cost everyone in California MILLIONS, and they still will be married if a liberal judge decides.
And Obama will most likely get to pick the next supreme court justices that will over turn prop 8 on a NATIONAL level.
Enjoy the hate money hole you have all made!
By anonymous, on November 7, 2008 15:36:37
you've hit it right on the head #5 because being straight is also a lifestyle choice.
By equality for florida, on November 7, 2008 15:42:04
#24 your so right and I'm sure the millions of women and African Americans in this country should have just "gotten over it" when they weren't allowed to vote as well. Gay couples want to get married for the same reason straight couples do, because they're in love. Gay couples getting married does not take away anything from anyone else's marriage. The state doesn't have a limited supply of marriage licenses.
By equality for florida, on November 7, 2008 15:47:16

In nature, males are designed to produce as much offspring, and to mate with as many different fertile females as possible. Therefore, marriage is unnatural and always has been. This is the reason why so many people end up cheating while in a committed relationship.

Since everyone is whining about personal injustices, I'm going to cry because I feel discriminated when I'm taxed a hell of lot more than someone who is married or those who have popped babies from their vagina. anonymous @ 18:11:
Jean Chretien (a Roman Catholic), former Prime Minister of Canada, in 2003, when asked by his party to hold a referendum on gay marriage:
"To have a referendum to decide on the fate of the minority, it's a problem. It's why we have constitutions – to protect the rights of the minority. It's why we have the Charter of Rights. So if it is always the majority vote by referendum, who will defend the minorities?"
(English isn't his first language, hence the odd phrasing.)

Some of you lot don't even seem to understand the constitution you claim is so important when you're loading up your essential automatic weapons.
By Burch, on November 8, 2008 03:38:55

Is it a taxes thing? An adoption thing? Or is it just an acceptance-by-society thing?
By Mindy, on November 8, 2008 11:22:03
Because this country wasn't founded on YOUR principles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rahm_Emanuel
Emanuel is said to have "mailed a rotten fish to a former coworker after the two parted ways."[7] On the night after the 1996 election, "Emanuel was so angry at the president's enemies that he stood up at a celebratory dinner with colleagues from the campaign, grabbed a steak knife and began rattling off a list of betrayers, shouting 'Dead! ... I'm not religious at all. I'm just against Supreme Court judges abusing their power and they have a very long history of doing it.
The voters made the right decision, the Supreme Court didn't.
By anonymous, on November 8, 2008 13:53:09
The people of California have spoken. So be it. Both McCain, AND Obama held the same position about gay marriage. They personally did not approve of it, but said it should be up to the people of each state to decide for themselves. What I find a bit ironic is, that in a voter profile breakdown, over 70% of black voters in Calif, voted to ban gay marriage. So much for 'minorities' supporting each other's rights.....I guess it only matters when it effects YOU.
By anonymous, on November 8, 2008 19:27:39
By anonymous, on November 8, 2008 21:28:56
By equality for florida, on November 8, 2008 22:29:58
#93 - There is no law that states the right to marry means the right to marry someone of the opposite sex. The right to marry is considered a fundamental right PERIOD. Why the FUCK would a gay person marry someone of the opposite sex?? You are an idiot. The country was built on the principles of freedom and there are certain freedoms and fundamental rights that are explicit and implicit in the Constitution. You can't eat your human burgers because society does not condone murder and cannibalism, which is not the same as discussing the right to marry.
By anonymous, on November 8, 2008 22:42:00
92 you are so wrong, obamma is WAY more against it than mccain, duh! quit posting lies, he has allready been elected.
By anonymous, on November 9, 2008 03:45:23
Why are the gays so misinformed about Obama, they think because he is a democrat he is cool with homosexuality, he is major homophobic, many republican politicians even though they are the concervative party have gay family members and are open and loving about the situation Obama not so much, Obama hates gays.
By wake up gays, on November 9, 2008 03:49:22
Obama lied to get your votes and you believed him. Idiots.
By anonymous, on November 9, 2008 12:30:54
#98 HA HA HA, Barack won and you can't do anything about it!!!! HA HA HA
By anonymous, on November 9, 2008 13:24:43
It seems like many liberals, especially younger voters, are confused about what our "fundamental" rights are. No, #95, nobody has the fundamental right to get married, and especially not when you rope in all of the govt. issues, taxes, etc that go along with it.
Its like all of the liberal bankers who fucked up the economy acting like it was a fundamental right to own a home. Its not. Especially not a home that is waaay out of your price range.
By anonymous, on November 9, 2008 14:17:14
Seh should probably ask Wesley Snipes about how that whole not paying taxes thing worked out for him.
By Brass, on November 9, 2008 14:25:50
The democratic party was suppose to be the party that promoted both blacks, and women, yet it was the Bush administration that employed the most of both minorities in government. Also Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter is gay and he said he supported her rights, and personal choice. Everyone thinks just because the democrats go on about these issues so much, they are the open minded ones. Look how they ripped Palin apart. She was still a woman who had accomplished a lot yet they treated her like she set women's rights back 100 years!
By anonymous, on November 9, 2008 16:22:02
#102 when did dick cheney ever say he supposed his daughter being gay!? and Sarah Palin accomplished alot?? The only, and I repeat, the ONLY reason why Sarah Palin was picked to be McCain's VP was because Barrack did not pick Hillary as his and he wanted to grab up women voters. THATS IT! she didn't accomplish anything other than showing American she is a complete biggot, unintelligent moron.
By palin sucks, on November 9, 2008 19:08:38
Go Melissa. Support you in every way and if you don't feel right about paying your taxes I have to agree. If they do not appreciate your lifestyle/marriage fuck them!
By amy, on November 9, 2008 21:00:20
#100 The fundamental right to marry does exist. See Loving v. Virginia, a landmark US Supreme Court case.
By anonymous, on November 9, 2008 23:16:15

By Kelly, on November 10, 2008 06:59:26
If you missed the all the media hoopla about Dick Cheney's daughter Mary being "outed" in the press back several years ago, you represent the "newly" duped, and uninformed voter. Go read a history book. As for Palin's accomplishments, how many other women in U.S. government have been elected major, then have gone to to be elected Governor and have turned around the economy of an entire state. Even Ann Richards did not do that, but then you probably don't know who she is either.
By anonymous, on November 10, 2008 07:37:29

Once again, for the retards whining about how no one has read the Constitution, you should probably read it yourself.
By Kate, on November 10, 2008 07:48:01
Cheney was at odds with both the Bush administration, and the some advocates in the GOP for his position on gay marriage. He has said on record that he is proud of his gay daughter( who also campaigned for him) and that "Freedom means freedom for everyone, and that people should be free to enter into any relationship they want to." He also stated the gay marriage rights were issues that should be decided by individual states. I guess that made him more "liberal" than Obama in this area!
By anonymous, on November 10, 2008 07:54:50
Wow, what rock did everyone just crawl out from under? I come here to have fun, not read a bunch of wacko posts from bitter political nerds who have too much time on their hands.
By anonymous, on November 10, 2008 09:32:37
Sorry, but I don't mind people having an intelligent discussion about current events now and then on these sites. Frankly, I'm glad that (some) people educate themselves about these things. God help us if we don't!
By anonymous, on November 10, 2008 11:47:58
I remember reading somewhere that a man was able to marry a goat in some country this year. I want to say it was in The Netherlands but I don't want to piss off our Dutch friends if I'm wrong. Anyway, I agree with most posters that this isn't a Constitutional issue, but a State issue.
Melissa just needs to stop bitching and move to New Jersey.
By anonymous, on November 10, 2008 12:36:10
Anonymous @ 12:36 & others:
to repeat:
"To have a referendum [or a "Proposition" as California calls them] to decide on the fate of the minority, it's a problem.
