I agree with No. 2. When I was in high school, another class had a group of people who jokingly voted the biggest nerd as class favorite and the nerd won. He seemed oblivious to the joke, which only made those who voted for him laugh harder. Mean, but true.

For my senior prom, a guy who clearly didn't fit the prom king stereotype got elected prom king as a joke. His friends campaigned for him as a joke, and everyone voted for him as a joke. Not a mean one though, a humorous one. We all had a good laugh. It's not hard to believe that maybe Verne Troyer's high school class did the same thing!
