Under the NHS in Britain, you can't get a pap smear until you're 25 if you expect the government to pick up the tab. The problem with nationalized healthcare is the standard of care is so low, and those in Britain that can afford it go for private doctors, hospitals and insurance.
The disease may be mostly preventable, but a bad read of a smear means you have to hope the next person who reads the next test will discover the mutating cells. Overall though, it's not a big killer, and women should be much more worried about heart disease.
Dave, I'm glad you have enough balls to say what I'm sure a lot of people are thinking. I've only known negative things about this person so it's hard for me to be sad for her. I sympathize for her her kids but that's it.

She would have had to have the vaccine before she ever contracted HPV (which in most women is before the ages of 18-22 when they become more sexually active)to "prevent" it and stop any sort of cellular changes which would have led to cancer. Additionally, cervical cancer in younger women tends to be more aggressive than when found in older populations, so she may have been getting her Paps regularly and just had no chance. Even in cases where women are regularly screened, they can still develop cervical cancer or other cancers of the genital tract. So before you go spouting like an ignorant twit, do your research.
