You all are overlooking the fact that his wife devoted her life to being his wife and mother of their children INSTEAD of having a career. Seven kids. Wow.
It's not that she "put up" with him all that time. It's that she is now 53, and if they split then he has a super successful career, and she has to go back to trying to compete for an entry level job - doing what?
The idea is that after nearly 30 years of playing a supporting role to his career, the wife shouldn't get dumped off with no resume or career history and have to move into a crummy little apartment and live on peanuts, because the marriage didn't work out. She's not a lazy bitch. She was a stay at home wife & mother.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ace Tomato. Also, Robyn was a dental nurse when they married - a year before his big break in Mad Max. It's obvious that she isn't a gold digger, or a attention whore using her husband's fame to push her way into the limelight. And, I believe I saw an interview with him once where he said he didn't believe in birth control and that his wife raised the kids on her own they had no nannies so you are damned right half of that is hers...he shouldn't have to be told to give it to her it should just be hers. In the end, this is a lesson for all of us: its not the money that makes us happy. Its how we feel about our lives that does. I have made many mistakes but my wife makes me feel loved and forgives me. The result is that I have stopped doing many things I used to do before.
Mel's wife and kids are out of line and here is why: Mel has a weakness - he womanizes and gets drunk. This requires forgiveness and thinking from Mel's perspective on how hard it is to be in Hollywood.
No one including Mel cares really about money, women or drinking or even religion. But when we are attacked and rebuked about our habits we defend them and get rebellious. His wife and kids insulted him all his life for his weaknesses. This led to a chain reaction and he has gotten worse over time.
How do I know all this? Look at his kids. Instead of sympathizing with their dad who loved them all his life, they are asking for INHEERIANCE. Is it really their money? They have no shame and gratitude. His wife is the same way. No wonder Mel finds comfort in drinking and other women.
This is not to defend Mel. He is plain wrong and needs to think about others instead of himself. Problem is that he also as selfish as his family.
