Children in poor countries often work, helping the parents with their job or bringing in money of their own. They also provide for people when they get old, like a retirement policy. This is one of the major reasons why countries that are largely poor and/or rural, such as India or China (which is still largely agrarian in huge areas) have such an incredibly high birth rate: Kids don't cost money, kids ARE money.
    
    Saying that he "shouldn't have had children if he can't afford them" is asinine. The truth is even worse: he is probably selling her simply because she is worth a lot, and not because it is a hardship for him to keep her.
