16. 5 & 11: In case you didn't realize, not all art is meant to be a realistic depiction. In this case, he is trying to give the painting a particular feel that reflects on the subject. The colors he uses, the distorted proportions, and various other grotesqueries portray Madonna as something like a siren -- an evil witch that entices, seduces, and sucks the souls out of men, who somehow find her alluring despite the fact that she is a haggard beast.
    
    In other words, don't think about whether the painting looks like Madonna. Think about how it makes you feel about her assuming that the subject is meant to be her.

    18: Two things:
    
    1st, I bet far less than half the commenters here could paint something that looks more like Madonna (or hell, even more like properly proportional human) than this.
    
    2nd, your second notion is probably closer to the truth. I'm willing to bet that this guy could paint a perfectly fine portrait of Madonna if he cared to do so. But realistic portraits oh-so-rarely ever portray any strong sense of emotion (or opinion) about the subject. Statements are easier made when liberties can be taken with realism. As with Picasso -- few people realize that Picasso was an extremely accomplished conventional painter. He just found it boring and did that weird cubism instead.
