Actually, they hit him hard where it hurts - his pocket book. Because he is a convicted felon, he'll likely be denied entry visas into most foreign countries and will be almost impossible to insure for liability purposes. He basically cannot tour.
Snoop Dog has had a few criminal convictions and a lot of countries have lifted the ban on giving him touring visa's. He's had a few countries that have been a bit difficult but it doesn't seem to have affected him too much. Chris will lose out because men and women won't buy his albums or go to his shows. People don't want to support someone who hits another person because they get angry about something. He's screwed himself over and I don't think many people care for him anymore.

So let me understand this craziness: Ron Spector can be sentence to basically shooting a woman in the face a life sentence. But every other celebrity who drunk drives, hits someone with their vehicles, where the victim is either dead or comatose(Hogan's), get caught with drugs everytime they get busted(lohan, spears, insert other celebrities here), beat up your girlfriend or spouse(Chris Brown) to shit, the list goes on & on & the California justice can only convict ONE celebrity out of how many?! Community service bullshit for the rest? Man! WTF!!
Rihanna did more than simply question him about the text message. Like a lot of black chicks she went insane in the car and was attacking Chris Brown (sorry for the generalization but I grew up in the projects so I have seen what angry black women are like).
He had no right to hit her back considering how tiny she is but if women want to be considered equals they can't start a physical fight and not expect to also get punished. Here actions should have been partially considered in the harshness of the sentence.
