I have to agree with what you're saying here. Michael Jackson made some good music, but he molested kids and popped drugs into his body like candy. Patrick Swayze had a good career which did not involve drugs and child molestation, and he still kept working even after being diagnosed with cancer. Personally, I think the whole Michael Jackson death thing was over-covered. It was like, "Ok, he died. Move on. It's ben 1386743536 days."
Very sad week. I never thought one's final bout with cancer could parallel that of my father, but Patrick was definitely a class act indeed. A great actor and a good person was lost this week.
What you and some of your readers fail to understand is that ANY death is sad, in and of itself. Swayze did absolutely nothing for you personally, as did Michael Jackson. For you to place some deaths on a pedestal and not others raises questions. It's your site, but accept the fact that we're not all mindless followers.
Michael Jackson was a longtime drug addict who could have prevented his demise. Yet he chose to pop Xanax as if it came in a Pez dispenser. He (allegedly) molested 2 children, one for which he was placed on trial for. Patrick Swayze, however, had an alcohol problem at one time and realized he could fuck up his career by drinking, checked himself into rehab, got treatment, completed it, and STAYED clean. He didn't have sleepovers with 4 year olds, he didn't dress kids in burlap sacks and surgical masks to hide their identity, he didn't get countless plastic surgery to look like a drag version of Joan Rivers; he led a clean, stable, private life. He went to work and then he went home. He didn't whine about his illness; he took that shit and did his treatments and that was it. And now he's gone.
I'm not saying MJ's death was to be not as mourned and Swayze's was, but damn it there's a thing called priorities. I feel more sympathy for a man who died through no fault of his own, in the prime of his life and doing what he loved with no complaints than I do for someone who had one satin pajama'd leg in in the grave and another resting on a Percocet bottle. Cancer killed Patrick Swayze; DRUG ADDICTION killed Jackson. And 3 months later, the media is STILL talking about it. Swayze, as bad as I hate it, will be back page news (if news at all) by next Tuesday. It's a sad world we live in.
It is entirely possible to be sad over a death of a person you don't know, #5. I remember when Reagan died, I cried because he was always so Grandfatherly to me (I'm young enough that I don't remember him in Office).
Mindless Followers or not, it's absolutely ridiculous...no...mind-numbingly retarded that someone would send a death threat over not mourning Michael Jackson. I sincerely hope you are exaggerating, Todd. The fact of the matter is that in our world, some past transgression will be easily forgiven because of someone's ethnic identity. Whether or not he was convicted of what he was accused, there's always that rumor surrounding him.
Patrick Swayze however, I have never heard anything but absolutely wonderful things about. MJ died what 2 months ago? Lets move on from that now and focus on mourning a fantastic actor who enriched people's lives with fantastic movies. I don't think there was a single Patrick Swayze movie I saw, that I didn't like. He fought his disease with dignity and inspired others to do the same. RIP.
Patrick Swayze was a class act. I'm reasonably sure he won't be sitting in a meat locker for six months while his survivors try to nail down DVD rights for the funeral before burying him.
I specifically recall derision at Jackson's passing, not only from the host of this site, but in the comments as well. It is what it is, though. Jackson died the same way (actually his passing was labeled a homicide) as people generally canonized: Belushi, Farley, Heath Ledger, Joplin, etc. Basically, people who took one too many and didn't do jack shit for you or me, other than provide entertainment. Yet, their death is handled a tad bit differently than Jackson's. Why is that? Aside from those lunatics issuing death threats, I think this is what the dissenters are asking.
Every death gets its fair due. I wasn't born when Elvis died, but I'm sure that drew its fair share of media-coverage. (BTW, another drug induced death). Today it's different, we're star obsessed; I mean look at us, look where we are - a CELEBRITY/ GOSSIP site!!! Michael was a spectacle while living, it's not a far-fetched idea for him to be one in death, hence the massive amount of coverage.
It really doesn't matter how the person died, be it from drugs (self-harm) or natural causes. A death is a death. It's impossible to single out Jackson, when others who died by similar means are glorified.
Now that this warm-up writing exercise is over (for me), I can go write my paper that's due tomorrow, lol!!!
Well I have disagree and agree with you on some level #7. Every death is a tragedy but you can't tell me you mourn the loss of someone who either did no harm or achieved greatness in their life as you would a serial killer. Are you saying a social worker and a murderer should each be mourned equally (even if neither did anything bad or good to you)?
The point was Patrick Swayze was a great guy (not to mention my first crush) and he didn't do anything wrong to anyone. I also remember he donated money quietly on several occasions. Micheal Jackson, while I pity him for being a victim of abuse, crossed the line when he abused other children. I don't feel pity for his death I do, however, am grateful he is dead if only so he can be at peace himself. The reason Farley and some of the others you mentioned are mourned was because they WEREN'T child molesters ... people keep forgetting that about Micheal Jackson ... if he had just been a drug addict I think he would have gotten more support from people on this site.
My parents never let me watch Dirty Dancing because it was naughty, when I finally saw it, the floodgates opened and puberty was fucking on. Thanks Patrick! My virginity owed you one.
34 years married to the same woman, SNL skit where he DIDN'T look like a tool, and donating quietly on the side? And yet Sean Penn gets to stay alive? Jeremy fucking Piven??
i feel so sad for his wife. Imagine 34 years of living and breathing w someone, then one day they are gone. For good. Her heart must hurt in the worse way..I can't even begin to imagine. Its like part of her is gone and she ha to move on. So sad.
So I guess no Road House 2? Damn! By anonymous, on September 16, 2009 03:12:01
Unfortunately, it was already made about 4 years ago & had nothing to do with the original movie or any of the orignal characters or actors; it starred Jonathon Schaech (sp?), and was trash; it went straight to video. -----------------------------------------------
What a class guy. The world needs more people like him, not less. RIP, Patrick
Patrick Swayze was bad ass in all his films. I will miss him and will never forget his SNL skit with Chris Farley. That's fucking hilarious the "Fuck you, Michael Jackson" part.
He was the man, plus he's a H-Town boy (Waltrip Ram Alum) so he's ok in my book. He had it all, charisma, talent, heart, good looks and he was still down to earth. RIP, Patrick Swayze
How come no one has commented on the odd items left on his star? A beaded strawberry? A flask of jameson's? Who...I mean why... just so weird. I'm er, sure Patrick, as a reformed addict would now WANT the flask. And as cowboy as he was, would wonder about hte strawberry. hee hee!
This is so sad to see... they were really a lovely couple. I had the brief pleasure of meeting them last fall when Swayze was in Chicago to shoot scenes for The Beast. He was (shockingly) frail and sickly, but they were completely inseparable and doting on one another the entire night. My heart goes out to his family.

Pretty sure I read Mr. and Mrs. Swayze married in June 1975....so 34 years married, not 24. Otherwise, I could not agree with you more! RIP Patrick.
