China cut exports of rare earth metals used in some electric motors and battery anodes and cathodes by 40% in July. Those metals are also used in weapons systems. There is a mine starting up again in the U.S. but it will take 15 years to rebuild the industry to process the ore. Fortunately there are alternatives to using rare earth metals.
The non-petroleum deficit of $296.9 billion can only be reduced by increasing exports or manufacturing more products in the U.S. and reducing imports. Neither one is likely to happen soon.
